Chapter 7 - The Desperate Petition

Dawn broke over Manhattan in shades of steel gray and bitter November frost.

In the basement lobby of the Vance Financial Tower, Ethan Cole sat on a plain wooden bench, shivering in his damp clothes.

His designer jacket was wrinkled beyond recognition, and dark purple circles bruised the skin beneath his hollow eyes.

Beside him, Diane Cole sat upright, clutching her worn leather handbag as if it were a shield against the world.

Every bank card in Diane's wallet had been declined at breakfast, forcing them to walk forty blocks down Madison Avenue on foot.

The executive elevator bell chimed, and Marcus walked out into the reception lobby carrying a thin black folder.

Ethan scrambled to his feet instantly, stumbling slightly on his worn leather loafers.

"Marcus! Please, tell Victoria I just need five minutes with her!" Ethan pleaded, reaching out with shaking hands.

"I didn't know about Richard! I swear on my life, I had no idea Richard was pulling the strings behind Lucy!"

Marcus stopped three paces away, maintaining a strict, impenetrable boundary.

"Mr. Cole, Miss Hale is currently presiding over an international board session and has zero availability for personal solicitations."

Diane stood up, trying to summon the aristocratic tone she had wielded for thirty years in high society.

"We are not soliciting, young man! We are here to negotiate the repayment terms of the mezzanine facility!"

"My late husband’s business cannot be dismantled because of a minor domestic misunderstanding!"

Marcus looked at Diane with a calm, pitying gaze that sliced deeper than any insult.

"Mrs. Cole, your mezzanine facility entered technical default at midnight when the secondary asset covenant was breached."

"The maritime cranes, the dry docks in New Jersey, and the company headquarters have already been placed under court-appointed receivership."

Ethan grabbed the lapels of his own jacket, tears spilling freely down his unshaven cheeks.

"Marcus, tell her I will sign over all my remaining personal shares to her foundation for free!"

"Just ask her to release the frozen checking accounts so my mother can buy her heart prescription and pay for a room!"

Marcus opened the black folder and pulled out a single document printed on heavy ivory stationery.

"Miss Hale anticipated your financial distress, Mr. Cole."

"She has authorized a one-time humanitarian grant of five thousand dollars to cover Mrs. Cole’s immediate medical expenses."

Diane gasped, her pride flaring up like dying embers in a fireplace.

"Five thousand dollars?! That is an insult! That doesn't even cover the monthly maintenance fee on our country club membership!"

"The country club membership was canceled yesterday afternoon, Mrs. Cole," Marcus stated flatly.

"And this grant carries a mandatory condition."

Marcus handed the document to Ethan, pointing his silver pen toward the signature line at the bottom.

"You must sign a complete, unconditional surrender of all claims to the Madison penthouse and the heirloom jewelry."

"And you must agree to testify truthfully as a cooperating witness against your brother, Richard Cole, in federal court."

Ethan stared down at the paper, his hands trembling violently as he read the clauses that permanently stripped him of his family pride.

"If I sign this... Richard will release all the private corporate emails we shared," Ethan whispered, terrified.

"If you do not sign it, Mr. Cole, the city marshals will take you into custody before you exit this building for outstanding fraud warrants."

Ethan looked at his mother, who turned her face away in bitter, helpless defeat.

With a shaking hand, Ethan took the silver pen and scribbled his name across the line.

"It is done," Ethan choked out, handing the pen back to Marcus.

Marcus took the paper, checked the signature with a practiced eye, and handed Ethan a pre-loaded debit card.
