Chapter 5 - The Origin of the Fraud

Behind the locked double doors of the penthouse, the silence was absolute.
Outside in the hallway, the muffled sounds of Diane Cole’s frantic cursing and Lucy’s hysterical sobbing slowly faded as building security escorted them toward the service elevators.
Victoria stood in the center of her grand living room, her breath calm and steady.
She walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass wall, looking out at the glittering lights of Manhattan stretching toward Central Park.
She unbuttoned her cuffs, rolled up her sleeves, and walked back to the dresser where the framed photograph had fallen.
Beside the broken glass lay the medical envelope from Continental Diagnostic Laboratories.
Victoria picked up the paper once more, holding it directly beneath the halogen desk lamp.
Beneath the stamped words PREGNANCY NOT CONFIRMED, a faint secondary watermark was visible within the grain of the paper.
It was not the official seal of the New York State Department of Health; it was a digital watermark used by private offshore document clearinghouses.
Her private telephone buzzed on the glass table.
Victoria tapped the speakerphone icon.
"Nathan," Victoria said, recognizing the secure encrypted line of her chief intelligence investigator.
"Victoria, I have the forensic trace on the laboratory slip you recovered from the frame," Nathan Hayes reported immediately.
"The forged hormone panel was not purchased by Lucy Grant."
Victoria’s eyes narrowed slightly as she leaned against the mahogany desk.
"Explain."
"Lucy didn't have the technical connections or the capital to commission a high-grade laboratory forgery from a European server," Nathan explained.
"The payment for that forged clinic report originated from an offshore account registered in the British Virgin Islands."
"The ultimate beneficial owner of that account is Richard Cole—Ethan’s estranged elder brother."
Victoria’s hand tightened around the paper.
Richard Cole had been exiled from the Cole family five years earlier following a massive corporate embezzlement scandal at their maritime transport firm.
Ethan and his mother had always claimed Richard was completely out of the picture, living as an outcast in Europe.
"Richard funded Lucy’s entire operation?" Victoria asked, her voice dropping into a deadly whisper.
"Not just funded, Victoria; Richard created Lucy Grant," Nathan revealed.
"Lucy was Richard’s executive paralegal during his trial in London."
"When Richard realized that your family trust was backing Ethan’s logistics expansion, he saw his chance to reclaim the entire estate."
"He planted Lucy in New York, fabricated her background as an affluent heiress, and orchestrated her introduction to Ethan at the Hamptons polo tournament."
"The fake pregnancy was designed to force an immediate marriage before Ethan’s thirty-first birthday."
Victoria pieced the timeline together with chilling speed.
"Under the Cole family trust bylaws, if Ethan marries and produces an heir before thirty-one, the eighty-million-dollar family reserve unfreezes automatically."
"Precisely," Nathan confirmed.
"And because Richard held a secret power of attorney over Lucy’s LLC, every single dollar transferred to Lucy would have flowed straight into Richard’s foreign bank accounts."
"Ethan thought he was playing the charming scoundrel, but he was actually walking into his brother's execution chamber."
A slow, dangerous smile curved Victoria's lips.
"And Diane was so desperate for social status that she pushed her own son straight into the trap."
"What are your orders, Victoria?" Nathan asked.
Victoria walked over to her safe, input her biometric thumbprint, and withdrew a thick manila folder containing the original debt guarantees for the Cole shipping lines.
"Ethan and his mother are currently standing outside the building with nowhere to go."
"Lucy will try to contact Richard tonight the moment she realizes the game is over."
Victoria closed the safe door with a firm, resounding click.

"Tap Lucy’s phone lines, freeze every remaining credit facility attached to the Cole family name, and prepare a complete evidentiary brief for the federal prosecutor."
"Tomorrow morning, we don't just settle a broken engagement."
