Chapter 11 - The Phantom Investor

The expansion of the Eastern Maritime Alliance demanded fresh international shipping lanes along the Pacific rim.
Victoria Hale sat in the corner suite of the Vance Financial Tower, examining a complex series of hostile acquisition bids.
Marcus stepped through the frosted double doors, placing an urgent financial analysis ledger directly onto the glass blotter.
"A Singapore-registered consortium called Apex Crest just acquired seven percent of our floating preferred stock," Marcus stated with quiet concern.
"They bypassed our primary underwriters by snapping up secondary tranches released during the Cole bankruptcy liquidation."
Victoria lifted the dossier, her sharp gaze scanning the intricate labyrinth of nominee directors and Cayman Island holding trusts.
"Who signed off on the beneficial ownership declaration for Apex Crest?" Victoria inquired, her voice smooth and devoid of panic.
"A Swiss private attorney named Conrad Richter," Marcus replied, tapping a photograph showing a middle-aged man in a bespoke gray suit.
"Richter was the lead corporate counsel for the European branch of the Sterling family before their maritime assets were seized."
Victoria leaned back against her leather executive chair, her fingers resting lightly against the edge of the mahogany desk.
"Evelyn Sterling never possessed the strategic foresight to organize an offshore takeover of this magnitude."
"And Julian is currently clocking forty hours a week scanning bar codes at an auto warehouse in Newark."
"There is a third architect operating in the background, Marcus."
Victoria closed the folder with a deliberate, decisive snap.
"Instruct Nathan to trace the initial wire transfers that funded Apex Crest's custodial account in Zurich."
"If someone is trying to build a secret bunker inside my cap table, I want their names, tax records, and bank passwords by sunset."
Across the river in an industrial corridor of Hoboken, Julian Cole stood outside a corrugated metal garage, his breath fogging in the autumn chill.
A sleek black town car with tinted windows pulled up to the curb, its tires crunching softly against the gravel.
The rear window rolled down two inches, revealing the cold, aristocratic profile of Helena Vance—Victoria's estranged first cousin.
"Get inside, Julian," Helena commanded, her voice sharp as broken glass.
Julian pulled his faded jacket tightly around his chest, his hands trembling as he stepped toward the open passenger door.
"Helena... the federal monitor told me that any contact with the extended Vance family violates my parole terms," Julian stammered.
"The federal monitor answers to the Southern District, and my family funds the political campaigns that appoint their judges," Helena snapped.
Julian slid onto the leather seat, staring down at his scuffed boots while the vehicle accelerated smoothly into traffic.
"What do you want with me? Victoria took everything: my name, my mother's home, and every dollar in our family accounts."
Helena turned her head, offering a predatory, razor-thin smirk that mirrored the cruelty of her late father, Arthur Vance.
"Victoria took your pride because you acted like a crude amateur with a cheap mistress in a silk robe."
"My father made the mistake of using disposable thieves like Lucy Grant to do a job that required surgical corporate assassination."
Helena reached into her leather briefcase and pulled out a fresh, unexecuted power of attorney form.
"You still hold the legal status of an aggrieved former spouse under Section Fourteen of the original corporate merger charter."

"Sign this proxy, Julian."
"And I will hand you ten million dollars in bearer bonds and a one-way ticket to Buenos Aires before Victoria realizes the roof has collapsed."
