Chapter 3 - The Stolen Heirloom

Lucy’s face turned from flushed red to a mortified shade of chalk.

Every illusion of wealth and romance Ethan had fed her over the past four months was shattering right before her eyes.

She wasn't being courted by a wealthy scion; she was being entertained on his abandoned fiancée's corporate tab.

Desperate to land a fatal blow against Victoria’s unyielding composure, Lucy reached into her pocket and pulled out her smartphone.

"You think money is everything, don't you, Victoria?" Lucy spat, thrusting the glowing screen inches from Victoria’s eyes.

On the screen was a high-resolution photograph of Ethan smiling broadly, holding an antique velvet ring box against a sunset background.

Inside the box was an exquisite, one-of-a-kind three-stone diamond ring set in hand-carved platinum filigree.

"He was going to give me this tonight," Lucy said, her voice dripping with spiteful triumph.

"He told me that this ring represented a love that money could never buy."

"He told me I was the only woman worthy of wearing it."

Victoria’s gaze locked onto the image on the screen, and for the first time that night, the air in her chest tightened.

The diamond setting was instantly recognizable to her; it had belonged to her mother, Catherine Hale, who passed away five years ago.

"Where did you get that ring?" Victoria asked, her voice dropping into a dangerous, lethal register.

Ethan took a hurried step backward, his hands sweating so profusely that he could barely hold his phone.

"Victoria, wait... don't jump to conclusions, let's talk outside," Ethan stammered, panic lacing every syllable.

"That was my mother's ring," Victoria said, stepping directly into Lucy's path.

Lucy smirked, completely unaware of the line she had just crossed.

"Well, it's mine now," Lucy declared proudly, lifting her right hand and thrusting her ring finger into the light.

The three diamonds glittered brightly under the chandelier, resting on Lucy’s hand like stolen treasure.

"Ethan gave it to me this morning before we arrived at the club."

Lucy attempted to push past Victoria toward the bedroom to retrieve her overnight bag.

Before Lucy could take two steps, Victoria reached out and seized Lucy’s wrist with a grip of pure steel.

Victoria wrenched Lucy’s hand upward, pulling her fingers directly beneath the overhead chandelier light.

"Ow! Let go of me! Don't touch my things!" Lucy screeched, thrashing frantically to break free.

"Your things?" Victoria whispered, her eyes burning with an icy, terrifying intensity.

"Take it off."

"No! Ethan gave it to me! It belongs to me now!" Lucy yelled, looking at Ethan for help.

"Ethan, tell her to stop assaulting me! Do something!"

Ethan stood completely frozen, his heart hammering against his ribs as he watched Victoria’s expression turn to stone.

"Victoria... please... it's complicated," Ethan choked out, his voice cracking.

"I needed something meaningful to show Lucy that my family was serious about the alliance."

"You went into my personal apartment, opened my mother's antique jewelry box, and stole the last thing she gave me before she died?"

Victoria squeezed Lucy’s wrist tighter, forcing the woman down toward the edge of the marble table.

"Take it off, Lucy, before I have the police break every single finger on this hand to recover stolen property."

Lucy gasped in sheer agony and fear, realizing that Victoria was entirely capable of carrying out the threat.

With her left hand, Lucy furiously clawed at the platinum band, pulling the three-stone ring off her finger and slamming it onto the marble table.

"There! Take your stupid ring!" Lucy screamed, rubbing her bruised wrist with tears of humiliation welling in her eyes.

"Prove it's even yours! You just claim everything belongs to you because you're paranoid!"

Victoria picked up the cold platinum ring, her thumb brushing gently over the inner rim of the band.

She turned the ring toward the light, exposing the microscopic cursive engraving carved into the metal.

"Turn it over, Lucy," Victoria whispered with chilling precision.

"Read the inscription."

Lucy leaned in involuntarily, her eyes scanning the tiny letters: TO VICTORIA — LOVE, MOM.

Lucy choked on her own breath, completely cornered, her face draining of all defiance.

Victoria turned her gaze slowly from the ring directly into Ethan’s hollow, guilty eyes.

"You stole the memory of my dead mother to impress a common social climber?"

Ethan fell against the credenza, shaking his head frantically.

"Victoria, I swear I was going to replace it! I ordered a replica from Harry Winston, but the stones were delayed!"

"Can you replace my mother too, Ethan?" Victoria asked, her voice steady, low, and final.

She slipped the precious heirloom onto her own finger, feeling the familiar warmth of her family’s legacy returning where it belonged.

"Security," Victoria commanded without glancing toward the door.

"And tell the front desk that if either of them steps foot inside this building again, they will be arrested on sight for felony larceny."
