Chapter 1 - The Altitude of VengeanceThe pressurized cabin of the Sikorsky S-92 smelled of expensive Italian leather, ozone, and the rich, velvety scent of the crimson roses Marcus had laid across Elena’s lap. Outside the tinted, double-paned windows, the manicured lawns of Julianna’s family estate shranked into insignificant green squares, looking less like a grand kingdom and more like a poorly maintained chessboard.

Elena leaned her head back against the plush headrest, letting out a long, shuddering breath that she had been holding since she first sat down at that treacherous tea party. The rhythmic, deep thrumming of the helicopter’s rotors vibration through her seat was strangely comforting, a stark contrast to the brittle, malicious whispers of the high-society crows she had just left behind.
Marcus didn't speak immediately; he understood the weight of the silence she required. Instead, he unbuttoned his navy wool suit jacket and shifted closer, his large, warm hand immediately finding hers and squeezing it with a reassuring firmness. With his other hand, he unhitched a crystal decanter from the built-in side bar and poured her a glass of chilled sparkling water infused with elderflower, handing it to her with an unspoken devotion in his dark eyes.
"You held the line perfectly," Marcus said, his voice low, a gravelly baritone that effortlessly cut through the ambient drone of the aircraft. "My legal team was monitoring the digital signatures in real-time from the London office. The moment Julianna opened her mouth to insult you, her father’s signature cleared on the final debt-restructuring waiver. She literally talked her family into bankruptcy."
Elena took a small sip of the water, feeling the cool liquid soothe the dryness in her throat. A faint, sharp smile played at the corners of her lips, though her eyes remained weary. She looked down at her pregnant belly, gently tracing the outline of her child beneath the soft fabric of her dress.
"Julianna always was blinded by her own arrogance," Elena murmured, her voice steadying as the adrenaline began to fade. "She genuinely believed that because I chose to wear a simple dress and use the public health registry, I was defenseless. She forgot that the loudest people in the room are usually the ones with the most to lose."
Marcus’s expression hardened, the sharp line of his jaw tightening as he thought of the cruelty his wife had endured over the past three weeks while he was stuck across the Atlantic, fighting off hostile corporate raiders. He reached up, gently brushing a stray lock of dark hair away from Elena’s face, his thumb lingering against her cheek.

"They will learn, my love," Marcus promised, his tone carrying the chilling weight of absolute certainty. "By the time we land at the penthouse, the market will open in New York, and the Vance Conglomerate will officially announce the acquisition of the entire valley's maritime bonds. The people who laughed at you today will be begging for an audience with you by tomorrow morning."
Elena looked out the window as the helicopter banked sharply to the north, heading toward the shimmering glass skyline of the city. She knew this was only the first move in a much larger, much more dangerous game, but for the first time in months, she felt completely safe under the shadow of the executioner’s wings.
