Chapter 2 - The Midnight LedgerThe penthouse apartment occupied the top three floors of the Vance Tower, a monolith of black glass and steel that overlooked the harbor. Down below, the lights of the cargo ships and shipping containers looked like a scattered constellation of amber and red, a physical manifestation of the empire Marcus commanded.

Elena sat at the massive mahogany desk in the primary study, wrapped in a plush cream cashmere robe that hidden her maternity silhouette. The room was illuminated only by the soft glow of three oversized computer monitors and a single green-shaded banker's lamp. Her fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard, auditing the hidden accounts that Julianna’s family, the Bradsfords, had attempted to conceal from the federal regulators.
Marcus entered the room quietly, holding a tray with a bowl of warm oatmeal, honey, and a cup of decaffeinated chamomile tea. He set it down beside her documents, frowning slightly as he noticed the dark circles beginning to form under her brilliant eyes.
"The doctor explicitly said you need eight hours of uninterrupted sleep, Elena," Marcus chided gently, though there was no real anger in his voice, only deep, consuming worry. "The Bradsfords are already ruined. You don't need to stay up dissecting their corpse."
Elena didn't look up from the screen, her eyes tracking a series of irregular wire transfers originating from an offshore shell company in the Cayman Islands. She reached out, blindly taking his hand and pulling him closer until he was forced to lean over her shoulder to look at the data.
"Look at this, Marcus," Elena said, her voice dropping to a sharp whisper. "This isn't just standard corporate mismanagement or vanity spending. Julianna’s father wasn't just trying to short our maritime bonds; he was laundering money for the European port syndicates. They weren't trying to survive the third-quarter audit; they were trying to buy out our western terminal entirely."
Marcus’s eyes narrowed as he scanned the alphanumeric codes on the screen, his mind instantly calculating the logistics of the fraud. A cold, dangerous smile spread across his face as he realized the magnitude of the weapon Elena had just handed him.
"If these numbers are accurate," Marcus calculated aloud, his hand gripping the back of her chair, "we don't just take their estate. We can initiate a full federal freeze on every asset associated with their name, including their personal trust funds and the legal defense retainers."

Elena finally leaned back, looking up into her husband's fierce, protective face. She took a slow sip of the chamomile tea, feeling the warmth spread through her chest as she realized the absolute finality of their counter-strike.
"Julianna wanted to talk about budgets and expenses today," Elena said softly, her eyes flashing with a cold, unforgiving light. "Let's see how well she manages her budget when the state provides her with a court-appointed attorney and a standard gray jumpsuit."
