Chapter 3 - The Ghost of the RegistryBy 8:00 AM the following morning, the financial district was in a state of absolute chaos. The headline of every major economic journal featured a photograph of Marcus Vance stepping off his helicopter, contrasted sharply with a leaked image of the Bradsford estate being boarded up by corporate liquidation agents.

Elena sat in the private dining room of the Vance Tower, enjoying a breakfast of fresh fruit and poached eggs, when her personal assistant, Sarah, entered the room with a pale, trembling expression. In her hand, Sarah held a secure tablet displaying an incoming video call that had bypassed the standard security filters.
"It's Julianna Bradsford, ma'am," Sarah whispered, her voice shaking slightly. "She’s been calling the main switchboard every two minutes for the last hour. She says if you don't take the call, she’ll go to the press with stories about the 'fraudulent' public health registry file."
Elena calmly wiped her mouth with a linen napkin, showing absolutely no signs of panic. She signaled for Sarah to place the tablet on the table in front of her and touched the screen to accept the call, revealing Julianna’s frantic, tear-streaked face.
"Elena! You have to call them off!" Julianna screamed through the speaker, her perfectly coiffed blonde hair now a disheveled mess, her background showing the chaotic interior of a moving vehicle. "The bank just locked my mother's accounts! They took the cars! They’re saying my father is going to be arrested before noon!"
Elena looked at her former tormentor with a face as impassive and cold as sculpted marble. She leaned forward slightly, her voice quiet, lethal, and perfectly modulated.
"I told you yesterday, Julianna," Elena said, each word falling like an axe. "The public registry file was a security protocol. It was designed to catch rats who looked for weaknesses instead of focusing on their own ledger. Your father took the bait, and you provided the distraction."
"You’re a monster!" Julianna choked out, her voice cracking with a mixture of rage and terror. "I’ve known you for years! You were nobody! You were just a quiet girl who took notes in the corner of the boardroom! How dare you do this to my family!"

"You mistook my silence for submission," Elena replied smoothly, her gaze unwavering. "And you mistook Marcus’s absence for vulnerability. Goodbye, Julianna. I suggest you save your breath; you’ll need it for the deposition."
With a single tap of her finger, Elena disconnected the call, turning her attention back to her breakfast as if she had done nothing more than swat a persistent fly away from her plate.
