Chapter 5 - The Shadow in the NurseryThe afternoon sun cast long, golden shadows across the empty room that had been designated as the nursery in the Vance penthouse. The space was massive, featuring high ceilings and a massive arched window that overlooked the private gardens below.

Elena stood in the center of the room, her hand resting heavily on her stomach as she watched two interior designers quietly arrange a hand-carved crib made of solid white oak. Despite the absolute victory she had achieved over her rivals, a lingering sense of unease settled deep in her chest.

She heard Marcus’s footsteps before she saw him—the heavy, purposeful cadence that she could recognize anywhere. He stepped into the room, his jacket removed and his shirtsleeves rolled up to his elbows, looking less like a corporate titan and more like a protective father preparing a sanctuary.

"It’s beautiful, isn't it?" Marcus asked softly, stepping up behind her and wrapping his arms around her waist, pulling her back against his broad chest. He buried his face in the crook of her neck, inhaling the sweet, familiar scent of her hair.

"It is," Elena agreed, but her voice lacked its usual sharpness. She turned slightly within his embrace, looking up into his dark eyes with a rare flash of vulnerability. "Marcus... Julianna was right about one thing. I did spend weeks doing this alone while you were gone. And even though we won, I can't shake the feeling that the people who funded her father aren't going to let this go."

Marcus’s expression softened, the fierce warrior mask melting away to reveal the profound, unconditional love he held for the woman in his arms. He brought his hands up to frame her face, his thumbs gently wiping away a single tear that had escaped down her cheek.

"They have no choice but to let it go, Elena," Marcus whispered fiercely, his eyes burning with an intense devotion. "Because if they come for you, or if they come for our child, I will not just ruin them financially. I will burn their names out of the history of this city. You are a Vance now, and the world will learn what that means."

Elena let out a soft breath, her fears melting away under the heat of his absolute certainty. She leaned into his touch, knowing that no matter how many shadows gathered outside their windows, the fortress they were building together was entirely impenetrable.
