Chapter 3 - The Confrontation Behind the Velvet Curtain

The final, lingering note of Sienna’s song hung suspended in the heavy air of the Velvet Note like a fragile thread about to snap.

For several agonizing seconds, the entire upscale jazz club remained locked in a stunned, pin-drop silence that defied the usual boisterous energy of the venue.

Then, slowly at first, a single polite clap echoed from a corner table, quickly swelling into a wave of appreciative applause and murmurs of admiration from the patrons.

Sienna stood blinking under the glaring stage lights, her chest rising and falling rapidly as the adrenaline rush began to slowly recede from her veins.

She had done it; she had managed to pull off the impossible rescue mission without getting fired or drawing the lethal wrath of the club's terrifying owner.

Without waiting for an encore or even looking toward the VIP booth where Lorenzo Bianchi sat like a coiled predator, she turned sharply on her heel.

She hurried off the side of the stage and slipped back through the heavy velvet curtain into the relative safety of the dimly lit kitchen corridor.

"You were magnificent!" Phillip hissed in breathless, frantic relief, practically vibrating with nervous energy as he grabbed Sienna by her shoulders.

"Did you hear that room? They loved you! You just saved my miserable skin, Sienna, and I will never, ever forget this debt."

"Just let me go back to my tables, Phillip," Sienna whispered back, trying to steady her shaking hands and smooth down her standard-issue white apron.

"I am a waitress, not a headliner, and I have five different sections waiting for their drink orders right now."

Before Phillip could reply, the heavy metal door at the end of the kitchen corridor swung open with a resounding, bone-chilling thud.

The entire kitchen staff instantly froze in sheer terror, dropping their utensils and pressing their backs against the stainless-steel counters as three towering figures stepped inside.

Matthew Rossi led the way, his face carved from granite and his hand resting casually yet menacingly near his shoulder holster.

Behind him walked the two silent enforcers, blocking off any possible exit from the narrow corridor and sealing the room in absolute, suffocating dread.

And then, stepping through the doorway with slow, deliberate, predatory grace, came Lorenzo Bianchi himself.

The temperature in the kitchen seemed to drop twenty degrees the moment Lorenzo crossed the threshold, his tall, imposing frame radiating an aura of dangerous, suppressed volatility.

Phillip Hastings dropped to his knees so fast his knees hit the tiled floor with a sickening thack, his hands trembling violently as he bowed his head in total submission.

"Mr. Bianchi," Phillip stammered, his voice squeaking with absolute terror.

"I am so incredibly sorry for the disruption, sir, the headliner crashed on the expressway, and we had no choice, she was just filling in to save the—"

Lorenzo did not even spare a single downward glance at the groveling manager whimpering at his Italian leather shoes.

His pale hazel eyes, burning with an intense, haunting fire that nobody had seen in three years, were fixed entirely upon Sienna.

Sienna felt her breath hitch in her throat as the terrifying syndicate boss closed the distance between them until he was standing just two feet away.

Up close, Lorenzo was overwhelmingly imposing, his sharp jawline, immaculate tailoring, and the faint scent of expensive sandalwood and gunmetal combining into an intimidating sensory overload.

"What is your name?" Lorenzo asked, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that vibrated through the quiet kitchen with hypnotic authority.

"S-Sienna Holloway, sir," she managed to stutter out, forcing herself to hold her ground despite her trembling knees and the primal scream of her survival instincts.

Lorenzo stared at her face, tracing the delicate slope of her jaw, the dark hair pulled back into a severe bun, and the tired circles beneath her expressive eyes.

"Where did you learn to sing like that, Sienna?" he asked, his voice carrying an uncharacteristic tremor of raw emotion that completely stunned Matthew Rossi standing behind him.

"Down in New Orleans, Mr. Bianchi," Sienna answered honestly, swallowing hard as she tried to read the unreadable expression in his chilling eyes.

"Before I moved up to Chicago to take care of my younger brother, I used to sing in small neighborhood blues lounges down south."

"You don't belong out there carrying silver trays and dodging drunken politicians," Lorenzo stated quietly, his tone absolute and non-negotiable.

"Starting tonight, your employment as a waitress at the Velvet Note is officially terminated."

Sienna’s heart plummeted straight down into her stomach, a surge of panic and despair washing away her previous relief as she realized she was fired after all.

"Wait, Mr. Bianchi, please!" Sienna blurted out, stepping forward despite the glaring warnings from the armed enforcers.

"I need this job, I desperately need the money for my brother's medical bills at Northwestern Hospital, I cannot afford to be fired—"

"I did not say you were being fired from my payroll, Miss Holloway," Lorenzo interrupted smoothly, a faint, ghost-like twitch of his lips appearing for a fraction of a second.

"You are no longer a waitress."

"From this moment forward, you are the permanent resident vocal artist of the Velvet Note, reporting directly to my management team."

"And your salary will be adjusted to reflect a figure that ensures every single one of your brother's medical expenses is paid in full, starting tonight."

The entire kitchen staff stared in stunned, open-mouthed disbelief, unable to process the unprecedented decree coming from the most feared man in Chicago.

Sienna stood frozen in utter shock, staring up into the complex, haunted eyes of the mafia boss who had just completely upended her entire existence with a single sentence.
