Chapter 1 - The Midnight Knock

The storm was howling that night.

Rain lashed against the windows of my study.

I was sitting in my favorite leather chair.

A cup of tea was growing cold on the desk.

Then, the doorbell rang.

It was 2:00 AM.

Nobody comes to your house at 2:00 AM with good news.

I tightened my robe and walked slowly to the foyer.

I flipped on the porch light.

Standing there, soaked to the bone, was my daughter, Chloe.

Beside her was her husband, Mark.

They looked disheveled.

They looked panicked.

I unlocked the door and pulled it open.

Chloe immediately burst into tears.

"Mom, you have to help us," she sobbed.

"What happened?" I asked, keeping my voice level.

Mark stepped forward, running a hand through his wet hair.

"We lost it," he said.

"Lost what?" I demanded.

"Everything," Chloe wailed.

She told me they had sold their house.

All $500,000 of the equity.

She had turned every single penny over to Mark.

He had promised a massive return from a new digital business venture.

A cryptocurrency startup, he claimed.

He said it was a guaranteed goldmine.

"Two weeks," Mark muttered, looking down. "It crashed in two weeks."

"We are broke," Chloe cried. "We have nowhere to go."

They stood there with their bags, waiting for me to step aside.

Waiting for me to let them move into my home.

I looked at my daughter.

Then I looked at the man who had supposedly ruined her life.

Something felt wrong.

His posture wasn't that of a defeated man.

"No," I said quietly.

Chloe stopped crying instantly. "What?"

"I said no. You cannot move in here."

Mark's head snapped up.

The fake sadness vanished from his eyes.

Before I could react, he lunged forward.

His fist connected hard with my jaw.

Pain exploded across my face.

I stumbled backward, hitting the floor hard.

Chloe let out a piercing scream.

But she didn't rush to help me.

Mark stood over me.

He wiped the rain from his face.

A slow, cruel smirk spread across his lips.

"Good luck proving that, old lady," he sneered.

Then he grabbed Chloe’s arm, and they walked out into the night.
