Chapter 4 - Follow the Money

The police didn't just want Mark for assault anymore.
Now, the financial crimes division was involved.
Detective Ramirez was assigned to the case.
He sat in my living room, drinking my coffee.
"We looked into this digital business Mark mentioned," Ramirez said.
"Let me guess," I replied. "It doesn't exist."
"It's a ghost company," Ramirez nodded. "Registered to a P.O. Box in Delaware."
"So there was no bad investment."
"No. It was a complete fabrication to explain where the money went."
Ramirez pulled out a folder.
"We traced the bank accounts before the freeze hit."
"And?"
"Mark didn't lose the money. He transferred it."
He slid a piece of paper across the table.
It was a wire transfer request.
The destination account wasn't in Mark's name.
It was an offshore account in the Bahamas.
Under the name Elena Rostova.
"Who is Elena?" I asked, my stomach churning.
"We did some digging. She's a 25-year-old model. And Mark's mistress."
I felt a wave of disgust.
He was stealing my daughter's house to run away with another woman.
"But that's not the best part," Ramirez smirked.
He showed me a flight itinerary.
"Mark booked a one-way first-class ticket to Nassau."
"When does it leave?" Arthur asked.
"Today. At 3:00 PM."
I looked at the clock. It was noon.
Mark was probably at the airport right now.
He thought he had $500,000 waiting for him in the sunshine.
He thought he had left his broke wife crying on my porch.
He had no idea his accounts were frozen.
He had no idea the police had his flight details.

"Are you going to let him board?" I asked.
Ramirez smiled. "Oh, we're going to catch him right at the TSA checkpoint."
