Chapter 10 - Justice Served

The trial lasted three weeks.

It was a media circus.

The local news loved the story: The wealthy widow, the greedy daughter, the abusive husband, and the corrupt doctor.

Arthur was a shark in the courtroom.

The security camera footage of Mark punching me was played for the jury.

Mark tried to plead for a lesser sentence, claiming he didn't know about the larger plot.

The judge didn't care.

Mark received ten years for assault, real estate fraud, and attempted grand larceny.

Dr. Evans lost his medical license forever.

He pleaded guilty to conspiracy and received three years in a federal facility.

His wife divorced him before the trial even ended.

But Chloe’s sentencing was the hardest day of my life.

She stood before the judge, refusing to apologize.

She maintained that I was a horrible mother who owed her a luxurious life.

The judge looked at her with pure disgust.

"You plotted to steal your own mother's life savings and strip her of her autonomy," the judge said.

"You manipulated, you blackmailed, and you showed zero remorse."

Chloe was sentenced to fifteen years in state prison.

I didn't look at her as they led her away.

That chapter of my life was permanently closed.

I went back to my beautiful home.

I upgraded the security system.

I met with Arthur one last time to rewrite my will completely.

I left my entire estate to a charity that supports elderly victims of financial abuse.

Chloe and Mark had tried to take everything from me.

They thought I was just a frail old woman they could easily step over.

They learned the hard way that I was the one holding all the cards.

I sat in my study, a fresh cup of hot tea on my desk.

The storm had finally passed.

And for the first time in months, I smiled.
