Chapter 8 - Confronting the Doctor

Ramirez didn't waste time.

Within two hours, we were sitting in Dr. Evans' private clinic.

The waiting room was empty.

Dr. Evans looked pale and nervous when we walked into his office.

"Helen? Detective? What is this about?" he asked, adjusting his glasses.

Ramirez dropped the printed photo of the Power of Attorney onto his desk.

"It's about your signature on a fraudulent legal document," Ramirez said.

Dr. Evans stared at the paper.

His hands began to tremble.

"I... I don't know what you're talking about."

"Save it, Tom," I said coldly. "You witnessed a forged document giving Chloe control over my entire life. Why?"

He swallowed hard, sweat beading on his forehead.

"They made me," he whispered.

"Who made you?" Ramirez barked.

"Mark and Chloe," the doctor confessed, breaking down.

"I have a gambling problem. A severe one. I owe hundreds of thousands to some very bad people."

He buried his face in his hands.

"Chloe found out. She knew my bookie. She told me if I didn't sign the document as a credible medical witness, she would ruin my practice and tell my wife."

"So you sold me out to save yourself," I said, feeling sick.

"She told me you were losing your memory, Helen! She said you needed someone to manage your finances!"

"And you believed her? Without even examining me?"

He had no answer. He just cried.

"Stand up, Doctor," Ramirez said, pulling out a pair of handcuffs.

"You're under arrest for conspiracy to commit fraud."

I watched the man I had trusted for two decades get led away in metal chains.

There was only one person left to deal with.
