Chapter 7 - The Doctor's Signature

I stared at the forged Power of Attorney document.

To be legally binding, a POA needed two things.

A notary seal, and an independent witness.

The notary stamp looked fake, probably bought online.

But the witness signature caught my eye.

I squinted at the scrawled handwriting.

It was familiar. Too familiar.

I read the printed name below the signature.

Dr. Thomas Evans.

My stomach dropped to the floor.

Dr. Evans was my family physician.

He had been my doctor for twenty years.

He had delivered Chloe.

He had attended my late husband’s funeral.

Why in God's name was his signature on a fraudulent document designed to ruin me?

I pulled my phone out and snapped high-resolution photos of every page in the folder.

Then, I carefully placed it exactly where I found it.

I crept out of the room just as the shower turned off.

I went downstairs and immediately called Detective Ramirez.

"I need you back here," I whispered into the phone.

"What's wrong, Helen?"

"Mark is a pawn," I said. "Chloe is the one pulling the strings."

I told him about the folder.

I told him about the Power of Attorney.

"And Ramirez?" I added, my voice hardening.

May you like

"Yeah?"

"Bring a warrant for a doctor's office. We have a corrupted witness."
