Chapter 12 - The Aftermath

With Evan in police custody, Margaret had exactly three hours to get her belongings out of my house under police supervision.

Delilah and I drove over to the property to watch the spectacle. The moving truck Evan had rented was parked in the driveway. Margaret was dragging trash bags full of her cheap clothes out the front door, weeping hysterically while a squad car idled on the street.

She tried to take the television, the microwave, and even the expensive curtains I had bought. The police stopped her every time, forcing her to leave with only her personal items.

When she finally climbed into the passenger seat of her friend's car to leave, she rolled down the window to glare at us one last time. But she had no words left. She was defeated, broke, and her beloved son was sitting in a holding cell.

We watched the car drive away, taking the toxic energy that had poisoned this home for years with it.

I handed Delilah the real set of keys. "Welcome home, sweetheart."
