Chapter 15 - The New Beginning

A year to the day after I found them in that grocery store parking lot, we held a backyard barbecue to celebrate Noah's sixth birthday.

The yard was filled with laughter, friends, and the smell of grilling burgers. Noah was running through the sprinklers with his school friends, screaming with pure joy.

I stood on the patio, holding a glass of iced tea, watching my daughter. Delilah was talking to a handsome fellow teacher, laughing easily at a joke he made. She looked radiant. She looked free.

She caught my eye from across the yard and smiled. She walked over, wrapping her arms around me in a tight, meaningful hug.

"Thank you, Mom," she whispered. "For everything."

"You did the hard work, Delilah," I smiled, kissing her forehead. "I just handled the paperwork."

As I watched my grandson blow out the candles on his cake, safe and happy in the home that belonged to his mother, I thought back to Evan and Margaret. They had thought they could steal a life they didn't earn. They thought they could throw my family out like trash.

But they had made one fatal mistake: They forgot to check whose name was on the deed.

THE END.
