Chapter 2 - The Paper Trail of Betrayal

We drove to my house in silence. Noah was safely tucked into the guest room bed, finally sleeping on a real mattress, while Delilah sat at my kitchen table, nursing a cup of tea. I turned my attention to the manila folder she had handed me in the parking lot.

My hands trembled with a mix of rage and disbelief as I flipped through the pages. The first document was a forged real estate listing agreement. Evan and his mother, Margaret, were actively trying to sell the house I had bought.

The second document was even worse. It was a stack of unpaid loan notices. Evan had apparently racked up over $80,000 in secret gambling debts. To save himself, he and his mother had plotted to kick Delilah out, stage a quick cash sale of the property, and run off with the equity.

"They told me the house was legally theirs because we've lived there for five years and paid the property taxes out of our joint account," Delilah choked out, tears finally spilling over. "Margaret told me if I didn't pack up and leave quietly, she would call Child Protective Services and tell them I was an unfit, unemployed mother."

My blood boiled. Margaret was a manipulative, narcissistic woman who had never liked Delilah. She had moved into the guest bedroom of that house six months ago, claiming she needed "temporary help" after a minor surgery, but she never left.

"They think they own the house," I said, my voice eerily calm. "They think they can sell it."

Delilah nodded, looking utterly defeated. She didn't know what I knew. She didn't know the ace I held up my sleeve.
