Chapter 6 - The Setup

Over the next two weeks, Delilah and Noah stayed hidden at my house. Delilah began to heal. She started eating properly, the dark circles faded from under her eyes, and she began making calls to the local school district to reinstate her teaching license.

Meanwhile, our trap was set into motion. Dave, the private investigator, contacted Evan about the house. He drove a rented Mercedes to the property and did a walkthrough.

According to Dave's hidden microphone recordings, Margaret gave him the grand tour. She paraded around the house as if she were the queen of England.

"My son and I are just looking to downsize," Margaret's sickeningly sweet voice crackled over the audio file Dave sent us later that evening. "His ex-wife was a terrible burden, financially and emotionally. She abandoned the family, you see. So we're starting fresh."

Hearing her slander Delilah made me want to drive over there and break down the door, but I took a deep breath. Revenge is a dish best served legally binding.

Dave made an all-cash offer of $330,000. Evan accepted it immediately, practically drooling over the phone. Dave insisted on a rapid closing—just fourteen days. Evan eagerly agreed, promising to have his "attorney" draw up the paperwork.
