Chapter 1 - The Crimson Stain on the Ivory Gown

Roman Costa’s heavy hand settled securely at Harper’s waist during their very first dance as husband and wife.

She instantly gasped at the sudden, sharp friction of the movement.

He stopped moving immediately, his dark eyes narrowing with suspicion.

“What?” he asked, his voice a low, dangerous rumble.

“Nothing,” Harper whispered, forcing her lips into a tight, trembling line.

“That was not nothing,” Roman countered, refusing to let her pull away.

Harper forced herself to smile beneath the blinding glare of the crystal chandeliers.

Around them, hundreds of elite wedding guests watched the newlyweds with polite, fearful admiration.

She gently took Roman’s gloved hand and begged him to keep dancing before anyone noticed their pause.

Beneath the layers of expensive ivory silk and imported lace, the makeshift bandage at her right side was soaked through and warm.

Forty-eight hours earlier, Roman Costa had knelt on one knee and asked Harper to be his wife.

She had worked as his lead accountant for three consecutive years, long enough to understand the lethal rules of his underworld empire.

She also knew, with a quiet agony, that she had fallen completely in love with him, though she had never dared to say the words out loud.

Roman needed a wife whom the syndicate’s ruling commission would universally trust and respect.

He had chosen Harper simply because she was the only person in his corrupt world whose loyalty had never wavered.

When she had hesitatingly asked whether she could refuse his proposal, he had promised that her job and personal security would remain entirely intact if she said no.

Without hesitating any longer than a heartbeat, she had said yes.

Then, on the very night before their lavish wedding, Harper had gone completely rogue.

She drove alone into the rain-slicked industrial district to retrieve a hidden physical ledger proving that Victor Rossi had systematically stolen millions from Roman’s operations.

Roman had explicitly forbidden her from investigating Rossi on her own.

Unfortunately, Rossi’s heavily armed men had ambushed her inside the abandoned warehouse property.

A stray bullet had torn through her side just as she managed to shatter the lock and escape into the shadows.

Harper had ruthlessly hidden the severe gunshot wound, wrapping her torso in tight medical gauze before walking down the aisle.

If Roman ever found out who had actually shot her, she knew with absolute certainty that he would hunt Rossi down tonight, sacrificing his own position before the commission meeting.

She had desperately meant to get through the wedding reception first without raising any alarms.

Now, as the music swelled, Roman held her much more carefully as they glided across the polished marble dance floor.

Harper rested her aching cheek against his broad chest, listening to the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat.

She wanted nothing more than to confess everything and bury her face in his embrace.

Instead, she concentrated every ounce of her fading willpower on keeping her footsteps perfectly even.

By the final chord of the orchestra, a sickening warmth had spread completely beneath her custom dress.

In the absolute privacy of the private penthouse elevator, Roman suddenly turned sharply toward her.

“What aren’t you telling me?” he demanded, pinning her with a gaze that missed nothing.

“Nothing,” she lied weakly, “I’m just exhausted.”

He stepped closer, closing the physical distance until she could feel the heat radiating from his broad frame.

Harper straightened her spine against the wood-paneled elevator wall.

“Don’t,” she warned in a breathless whisper.

Roman froze in absolute disbelief.

She had never once raised her voice or spoken to him that way in all the years they had worked together.

“What happened?” he asked again, his tone dropping into a lethal register.

“Nothing happened,” she insisted, her vision starting to blur at the edges.

“That is the third time you have lied to me tonight, Harper.”

The heavy iron elevator doors slid open with a soft chime.

Harper stepped past him with shaking legs, determined to make it to the bedroom.

She made it exactly three steps onto the Turkish rug before her knees completely gave way.

Roman caught her falling body effortlessly against his muscular chest before she hit the floor.

A fresh wave of white-hot pain tore viciously through her bleeding side.

Harper cried out in agony before she could bite her lip hard enough to stop the sound.

Roman went terrifyingly still.

One powerful arm held her upright while his other hand instinctively rested at her waist.

His palm pressed directly over the exact place she had spent the entire day trying desperately to conceal.

“Harper?” he whispered, his voice cracking with a terrifying realization.

She instinctively gripped the lapels of his custom wedding jacket with trembling fingers.

His hand shifted beneath the expensive silk fabric, and Harper felt his fingers brush directly against the soaked, crimson bandage through the torn dress.

For one agonizing moment, neither of them breathed or moved.

Then, Roman slowly drew his hand away, bringing his palm directly into the dim light of the hallway.

His eyes locked onto the dark, unmistakable stain of fresh blood smeared across his wedding shirt.
