Chapter 7 - The Intruder in the Penthouse East Wing

While the underground tribunal delivered its swift and brutal justice, the private penthouse upstairs remained wrapped in an eerie, unnatural quiet.
Harper lay alone in the massive master bed, the dim moonlight casting long, jagged shadows across the silk sheets.
The painkillers Dr. Vance had administered were beginning to wear off, leaving a dull, burning ache radiating from her bandaged side.
She tried to shift her weight onto her left elbow, but a sharp twinge of pain forced her back against the pillows with a soft groan.
Outside the heavy oak bedroom door, a faint, metallic click broke the silence of the hallway.
Harper froze, her instincts flaring instantly to life despite her physical exhaustion.
She strained her ears, listening intently above the sound of her own rapid heartbeat.
A slow, measured footstep padded softly across the plush Turkish rug outside her door.
It was not the heavy, boots-on-marble stride of Roman’s regular guards.
The footsteps paused directly in front of the master suite.
Harper’s hand slid silently beneath the duvet, her fingers brushing against the heavy brass candlestick resting on the nightstand.
The brass door handle slowly began to turn, rotating downward with agonizing slowness.
The door clicked open a fraction of an inch, revealing a sliver of dark hallway light.
A tall, silhouetted figure slipped silently into the bedroom, moving with the practiced stealth of a professional predator.
The intruder wore a black tactical turtleneck and held a silenced automatic pistol gripped tightly in his right hand.
He crept toward the side of the bed, his dark eyes scanning the silhouette beneath the blankets.
Harper waited until the intruder was standing directly beside the mattress.
With a sudden burst of adrenaline-fueled strength, she swung the heavy brass candlestick upward with both hands.
The metal crashed squarely against the intruder’s wrist with a sickening thud, sending his pistol flying across the bedroom floor.
The man cursed viciously, lunging forward to grab her by the throat.
Harper didn’t hesitate; she slammed her knee upward with all her remaining strength, connecting squarely with his stomach.
The intruder doubled over, gasping for air as the wind was knocked violently out of his lungs.
Before he could recover, Harper hooked her arm around his neck and dragged him hard down against the edge of the mattress.
“Who sent you?” Harper demanded, her voice shaking with adrenaline as she pressed the heavy brass candlestick against his windpipe.
The intruder coughed, a cruel, blood-stained grin spreading across his face in the moonlight.
“You think... Rossi was the only one... who wanted you dead?” the man wheezed, his eyes rolling back slightly.
Before Harper could press him for a name, a deafening explosion echoed through the penthouse foyer.
The heavy glass doors of the private elevator shattered inward in a cascade of sparkling shards.

Heavy boots pounded down the hallway as Roman and his enforcers swarmed into the master suite.
Roman took one look at the intruder pinned beneath his new bride, and his face turned into a mask of pure executioner’s wrath.
