Chapter 14 - The Siege of the Sanctuary

The black town car smashed through the smoldering debris of the front gates without slowing down.

The vehicle slid sideways across the circular gravel driveway, stopping directly in front of the estate’s grand stone portico.

The night air was thick with gunpowder, the harsh staccato rhythm of machine-gun fire echoing from the interior wings of the mansion.

Roman kicked his door open and exited low, his rifle immediately barking twice as he eliminated an armed insurgent stationed by the main entrance.

Harper scrambled out behind him, staying low against the car’s armored chassis, her compact pistol held firmly in a two-handed grip.

Marcus and two tactical cruisers arrived seconds behind them, heavily armed loyalists deploying instantly across the manicured lawns.

“Sweep the perimeter and seal the service tunnels!” Roman bellowed over the gunfire.

“Nobody leaves this property alive!”

Roman led Harper through the shattered mahogany front doors and into the grand foyer.

The crystal chandelier that had sparkled during their wedding reception now lay shattered across the marble tiles like frozen tears.

Bullet holes pockmarked the antique plaster walls, and several fallen guards lay motionless near the base of the sweeping staircase.

“They’re heading for the subterranean archives,” Harper shouted, recognizing the tactical path the intruders were carving through the west wing.

“The master server vaults are down there—if they plant charges on the mainframe, they wipe every trace of Moretti's syndicate fraud!”

“Not while I’m breathing,” Roman snarled, moving with terrifying speed down the marble corridor toward the library.

A sudden burst of automatic fire ripped through the wooden doorframe ahead of them, forcing Roman to shove Harper hard against an alcove wall.

He leaned around the corner, squeezing off three precise rounds that neutralized the shooter instantly.

They pushed through the heavy double doors of the private library, where a secret reinforced elevator led directly to the vault level below.

Standing in the center of the library, holding an open satchel full of remote detonators, was Don Alberto Moretti’s primary enforcer—a hulking mercenary known only as Vance.

Beside him stood Elena Costa, her trench coat spattered with mud, a look of desperate madness warping her aristocratic features.

“Roman,” Elena laughed bitterly, raising a chrome-plated revolver toward them with shaking hands.

“You just couldn't stay at the docks, could you?”

“Drop the weapon, Elena,” Roman said, his rifle leveled unwavering between her eyes.

“You’re out of moves.”

“I’m not out of moves!” Elena shrieked, backing toward the open vault elevator.

“Moretti promised me the entire European territory once you were buried!”

“He said this little bookkeeper would make you soft, and he was right!”

“Look at you—risking your whole empire for a woman who doesn't even belong in our world!”

From behind the heavy oak bookshelves, a shadow moved with blinding speed.

Vance, the hulking mercenary, lunged at Roman from the blind spot, knocking the rifle from his grip with a crushing blow from a steel crowbar.

The two massive men crashed into the antique reading table, splintering the century-old wood into kindling.

Elena leveled her chrome revolver directly at Roman’s exposed back as he grappled with the mercenary on the floor.

“Goodbye, cousin,” Elena sneered, her finger tightening on the trigger.

A sharp, deafening gunshot tore through the library.

Elena gasped, her eyes going wide with shock as the revolver slipped from her limp fingers.

She looked down in disbelief at the red bloom spreading across her right shoulder before collapsing onto the Turkish carpet with a cry of pain.

Harper stood ten feet away, her compact pistol still smoking, the slide locked back after discharging the precise, disabling round.

Her hands were steady, her eyes cold as winter ice.

“I told you before,” Harper whispered through the drifting cordite smoke.

“Nobody touches my husband.”

On the floor, Roman used the momentary distraction to drive his combat knife up beneath the mercenary's tactical vest, ending the struggle instantly.

Roman shoved the heavy body aside and rose to his feet, breathing heavily, his suit torn and covered in dust.

He didn't look at the fallen mercenary, and he didn't look at his weeping, wounded cousin on the floor.

He walked straight to Harper, wrapped his bloody hand around the back of her neck, and pulled her forehead against his chest.

“You shot her,” Roman murmured, his voice thick with a mixture of reverence and sheer disbelief.

“I winged her shoulder,” Harper corrected, her breath hitching as the adrenaline finally began to ebb.

“I needed her alive so she can testify against Moretti in front of the federal prosecutors.”

Roman let out a ragged, triumphant laugh that echoed through the ruined library.

Outside, the gunfire slowly tapered off into silence as Marcus’s team secured the grounds.

The siege was over, and the house of Costa remained standing.
