Chapter 11 - THE FINAL RECKONING FOR THE COWARD

Three days after the raid on Sterling & Vance, I sat at a newly purchased, heavy oak dining table in my sunlit condo, sipping a steaming cup of freshly brewed black coffee. The previous dining set had been replaced with something far sturdier, a poignant reminder of the wreckage left behind by a man who had tried and failed to break my spirit.
A timid knock echoed softly from the front entryway, followed by the sound of someone shuffling their feet nervously against the welcome mat.
Setting my coffee cup down, I walked over to the front door and unlocked it, pulling it open to reveal Julian standing on the threshold. He looked utterly destroyed—his designer suit rumpled, his hair unwashed, and the arrogant, cocky smirk that once defined him entirely replaced by desperate, hollow terror.
"Elena," Julian whispered, his voice cracking pathetically as he looked up at me with pleading eyes. "Please... you have to help me. The police raided my apartment this morning. They took everything."
"I know, Julian," I said calmly, leaning against the doorframe with my arms crossed over my chest. "Federal warrants don't usually give people much advanced notice."
"Marcus and David are blaming everything on me!" Julian cried out, taking a desperate step forward as if he might try to force his way inside before I blocked the threshold with my hand. "They told the investigators that I was the primary mastermind behind the offshore accounts! I'm facing twenty years in federal prison, Elena!"
"Well, mathematically speaking, that sounds like a very accurate assessment of your career choices," I replied, my voice completely devoid of pity or warmth. "After all, a man who kicks dining tables and threatens his wife tends to make poor strategic decisions across the board."
"You set me up!" Julian roared, his brief facade of desperation flashing back into angry entitlement for a split second before reality crashed down on him again. "You lured me into this marriage just to ruin my life!"
"I didn't lure you into anything, Julian; you walked right into a trap of your own making because your greed blinded you to my independence," I stated coldly, looking down at him with absolute indifference. "You wanted a submissive wife who would hand over her debit cards and wait on you hand and foot. Instead, you found a woman who dismantled your entire criminal syndicate before breakfast."
Julian slumped against the hallway wall, his shoulders shaking with silent, pathetic sobs as the sirens of the approaching police cruiser wailed faintly in the distance down the street. "Is there... is there nothing I can do? Can't we talk about the prenup? Can't you use your lawyers to fix this?"
May you like
"The only thing I'm going to use my lawyers for is expediting our absolute, irrevocable divorce," I said, reaching into my pocket and tossing a thick manila envelope onto his chest. "Those are the finalized dissolution papers. Sign them before the police arrive, or let your cellmate sign them for you next week. Either way, our seventy-two-hour marriage is officially over."
Without waiting for another word from him, I stepped back inside the condo and swung the heavy oak door shut, throwing every single deadbolt into place with a series of sharp, satisfying clicks.
