Chapter 3 - THE MIDNIGHT REVELATION AT THE FIRM

The front door clicked shut behind Julian with a dull, hollow thud that echoed loudly through the silent, wrecked condo. I didn't bother chasing after him or checking if he took his cheap luggage; my mind was already racing several steps ahead into the corporate labyrinth where Julian truly operated.
Dropping my car keys onto the kitchen counter, I walked over to my home office desk and powered up my dual-monitor workstation. The screen flared to life, illuminating the dark room with a cool blue glow as I bypassed my personal firewall to access the secure internal database of Sterling & Vance.
Julian thought his embezzlement was a private matter between us, but my deep-dive financial audit of his personal accounts had revealed a much larger, systemic rot within his department. He hadn't just stolen from me; he had been systematically skimming client retainer fees for over six months to fund his lavish bachelor lifestyle.
"Let's see how deep this rabbit hole actually goes," I murmured to myself, clicking open a deeply encrypted folder labeled Internal Restructuring - Q2.
As rows of spreadsheets and transaction logs populated the screen, a familiar name caught my eye—Marcus Sterling, managing partner and Julian’s primary mentor at the firm. Marcus had personally vouched for Julian during our wedding reception, raising a glass of champagne while praising his protege's impeccable integrity.
"Impeccable integrity," I muttered dryly, leaning back in my ergonomic leather chair as a complex web of offshore shell companies and falsified audit reports unspooled before my eyes.
Marcus wasn't just turning a blind eye to Julian's petty theft; he was the primary architect of a multi-million-dollar tax evasion scheme using junior associates as disposable fall guys. Julian was nothing more than a low-level bagman in a high-stakes corporate conspiracy, completely unaware that his beloved mentor was planning to throw him under the bus at the first sign of trouble.
My phone buzzed violently against the desk, breaking my intense concentration with an incoming text message from an unknown number. I picked it up, unlocking the screen to find a short, chilling message accompanied by an attached photograph.
“You think you won by kicking Julian out? Look behind you, Elena.”
My blood turned to ice water as my eyes darted from the screen to the photograph attached to the text message—it was a live, high-resolution shot of my condo's back balcony, taken from the dark alleyway directly below.
Before I could even process the warning, a heavy, deliberate thud echoed from the hallway outside my front door, followed by the distinct sound of a key turning in the deadbolt. Someone had just bypassed my high-security smart lock using a master override code.
"That's impossible," I whispered, my heart hammering wildly against my ribs as I dove sideways toward the lower desk drawer where I kept a heavy tactical flashlight and a can of industrial pepper spray.

The front door swung open with a slow, agonizing squeak, revealing a tall, shadowy figure silhouetted against the dim hallway lights. The intruder stepped silently into the living room, moving with the cold, calculated precision of a professional predator rather than a panicked ex-husband.
"I know you're in here, Elena," a deep, gravelly voice called out into the quiet apartment, echoing with terrifying familiarity. "And trust me, Marcus sends his regards."
