Chapter 7 - THE RAIN-SOAKED CHASE THROUGH THE DISTRICT

The sedan fishtailed violently as Viktor whipped the steering wheel around a sharp corner, narrowly missing a row of industrial dumpsters lining the narrow alleyway behind the financial district. Water sprayed in massive, blinding sheets against the windshield as the howling rain hammered down without mercy.
"They're gaining on us!" I yelled over the deafening roar of the engine and the screech of tires, gripping the overhead handle as the car tilted dangerously on two wheels while rounding another tight corner.
"Let them try," Viktor muttered coolly, his eyes locked onto the rearview mirror where the blinding headlights of the two black SUVs loomed menacingly close. "They think they're hunting a frightened woman; they have no idea they're following a ghost."
"Who are you really, Viktor?" I demanded, turning in my seat to look at him as we rocketed down a deserted boulevard toward the old harbor district. "People like you don't just happen to show up in a parking garage with a tactical laptop and a vendetta against Sterling & Vance."
"Let's just say Marcus Sterling ruined a lot of lives before he set his sights on yours, Elena," Viktor replied cryptically, downshifting smoothly as we approached a sharp descent leading toward the shipping docks. "Ten years ago, my firm handled forensic audits for international conglomerates. Marcus systematically destroyed my reputation, stole my research, and left me for dead when I refused to sign off on his fraudulent shell companies."
"So you've been building a case against him all this time," I realized, watching the rain streak across the windshield in chaotic patterns.
"Julian’s marriage to you was the final missing piece of the puzzle," Viktor nodded, his expression grim. "The moment Julian signed those initial corporate guarantees on your wedding morning, he unknowingly handed over the master encryption keys to Marcus's primary offshore accounts."
"And David and Marcus realized tonight that I have those exact keys backed up on this drive," I added, holding up the small silver hard drive in my hand like a loaded weapon.
"Precisely," Viktor said as he suddenly cut the headlights entirely, plunging the car into absolute darkness as we careened down an unlit shipping lane between two massive container stacks. "Which is why they won't stop until every trace of you—and this drive—is permanently erased."
The pursuing SUVs roared past the entrance of our dark shipping lane, their red brake lights flashing furiously as they realized they had overshot our position in the blinding rain.
Viktor cut the engine completely, coasting the car silently into the deep shadows beneath an enormous gantry crane overlooking the dark, churning waters of the harbor. The sudden silence inside the car was deafening, broken only by the steady, rhythmic patter of rain against the metal roof and our own heavy breathing.

"We can't hide here for long," I whispered, peering through the rain-spattered window toward the main gate where the headlights of the SUVs were beginning to turn around. "What's our next move?"
"We don't hide anymore, Elena," Viktor said, turning to look me dead in the eye with a terrifyingly calm expression. "We take the fight directly to Marcus Sterling's doorstep while his entire legal defense team is distracted looking for us across the city."
