Chapter 4 - THE SHADOW IN THE HALLWAY

The intruder stepped further past the wreckage of the dining table, his expensive leather shoes crunching softly over the shattered porcelain scattered across the floor. I held my breath, pressing my back tightly against the side of the home office desk while keeping my fingers clamped firmly around the cold metal canister of pepper spray.
"You're wasting your time hiding in the den," the voice echoed again, sounding closer now as the man casually tossed a set of heavy brass master keys onto the kitchen counter. "Julian was an idiot for letting you get the upper hand, but cleaning up his mess is my specialty."
Peeking carefully around the edge of the desk, I caught my first clear glimpse of the intruder under the faint amber glow of the hallway security light. It wasn't a random thug or a hired street criminal; it was David Vance, the junior name partner of Sterling & Vance and Marcus's ruthless enforcer.
"David," I said clearly, stepping out from the shadows of the home office with my head held high and the pepper spray canister poised and ready in my hand. "Breaking and entering into a private residence at midnight to impress your boss? That feels like a rather drastic career move."
David didn't even flinch at my sudden appearance; instead, a cold, predatory smile crept across his sharp features as he adjusted his immaculate silk tie. "Elena. It's a pleasure to finally meet the brilliant mind Julian wouldn't stop complaining about during our firm mixers."
"Cut the charm, David. You have thirty seconds to walk back out that door before my security system automatically transmits this entire live feed directly to the federal financial crimes division," I said, holding up my phone with the recording light blinking steadily.
"Go ahead, press send," David replied smoothly, taking a slow, deliberate step toward the kitchen island without a hint of fear. "By the time federal agents figure out how to decrypt our offshore routing numbers, your condo will be burning to the ground, and your lovely little hard drives will be nothing more than ash."
My stomach dropped as the terrifying realization hit me—David hadn't come here to negotiate or intimidate me into silence; he had come to execute a total erasure of evidence.
"You think a fire will cover up corporate embezzlement?" I challenged, my voice remaining remarkably steady despite the adrenaline roaring in my ears. "Digital forensics can recover data from burned drives in their sleep, David."
"Maybe so," David said, his smile turning dangerously thin as he reached slowly into the inside pocket of his tailored jacket. "But digital forensics can't interview a dead woman."
Before David could pull whatever weapon he was concealing from his jacket, I squeezed the trigger of the pepper spray canister with all my might, unleashing a concentrated, blinding stream of chemical fire straight into his face.

David let out a sudden, agonizing roar of pain, stumbling backward blindly as his hands flew up to claw desperately at his burning eyes. "You bitch!" he screamed, swinging his arms wildly in a desperate attempt to grab anything within reach.
I didn't wait to see what he would do next; I bolted past him toward the front door, sprinting out into the brightly lit hallway and slamming the heavy steel door shut behind me, engaging every single deadbolt and security lock with a frantic series of clicks.
