Chapter 6 - THE GHOST IN THE SYSTEM

I slid quickly across the center console and dropped into the passenger seat as Viktor slipped behind the steering wheel with the fluid, practiced ease of a professional driver. He didn't turn on the ignition immediately; instead, he pulled a small, modified laptop device from his tactical jacket and plugged it directly into the car's diagnostic port under the dashboard.
"What are you doing to my car?" I asked, watching the screen flash with lines of green code as he bypassed the vehicle's onboard GPS tracker.
"Neutralizing the remote kill switch Marcus installed in every company-linked vehicle," Viktor replied without looking up, his fingers flying across the compact keyboard with blurring speed. "Julian wasn't the only one driving a leased corporate asset. Your condo's smart system and this vehicle were part of a comprehensive surveillance package funded by Sterling & Vance."
"So my entire life for the past year has been monitored?" I whispered, a wave of profound violation washing over me as the puzzle pieces finally clicked into place. My marriage to Julian hadn't been a chance romance at a charity gala; it had been a targeted corporate setup designed to infiltrate my personal finances.
"Marcus needed someone with unblemished financial credentials to quietly absorb and launder three million dollars in untraceable client retainer fees," Viktor explained quietly, finally hitting a final keystroke that caused the laptop screen to glow a steady, reassuring blue. "Julian was chosen to marry you because your company profile made you the perfect legal shield for their shell companies."
"And when I refused to hand over my debit cards and corporate passwords tonight..." I trailed off, the horrifying puzzle completing itself in my mind.
"When you refused, Julian panicked and tried to force the issue physically," Viktor finished for him, shifting the gear into reverse with a smooth motion. "He deviated from the script by losing his temper and destroying your dining table, which forced David to rush in and clean up the operational leak before you exposed them to federal regulators."
As Viktor backed the sedan silently out of the parking stall, the garage's main security gates at the end of the ramp suddenly slammed shut with a heavy metallic crash, sealing off the exit. Two unmarked black SUVs rolled slowly down the entrance ramp, their high-beam headlights blindingly bright as they blocked our only way out.
"Looks like your friends have arrived right on schedule," I said, my voice eerily calm as I reached into my bag and pulled out my encrypted backup hard drive.
"Hold on to something, Mrs. Thorne," Viktor said, a dangerous, confident smirk finally breaking across his weathered face as he slammed his foot down hard on the accelerator. "We're going off-script."

Instead of stopping at the barricade, Viktor spun the steering wheel hard to the left, directing the heavy sedan straight toward the underground maintenance tunnel used by the building's utility trucks. The reinforced chain-link security gate shattered into a thousand gleaming pieces under the front bumper of the car as we plowed through it, launching us out into the pouring rain of the back alleyways.
The unmarked SUVs screamed in pursuit behind us, their tires screeching against the wet asphalt as the high-speed cat-and-mouse game through the city streets officially began.
