Chapter 8 - The Real Identity

Ethan arrived home three hours later, bypassing the drawing room and going straight to his locked home office.
He texted Sarah to meet him there.
When she slipped inside, Ethan was staring at his computer screen, looking pale.
"You saw the video?" Sarah asked softly.
"I saw it," Ethan replied, his voice eerily calm. "But that's not the worst part."
He turned the monitor so Sarah could see.
It was a file from his private investigator.
There were mugshots of a woman who looked exactly like the woman upstairs.
"Her name is Roxanne Miller," Ethan explained. "She's a convicted con artist."
Sarah stared at the criminal record on the screen.
"Fraud, identity theft, grand larceny," Sarah read aloud, horrified.
"The real Victoria Vance is a reclusive heiress who has been in a private care facility for two years," Ethan said.
"Roxanne used to be her private nurse. She stole her identity, her banking details, and her social standing."
"And the blackmailer?" Sarah asked.
"An old associate of Roxanne's," Ethan guessed. "Someone who helped forge the documents."
Ethan buried his face in his hands.
"I almost married her, Sarah," he whispered. "I almost gave her control of my son's life."
Sarah walked over and placed a comforting hand on his back.
"You didn't know," Sarah said gently. "She fooled everyone."
Ethan looked up, his blue eyes filled with a fierce determination.
"But she's not getting away with it," Ethan said coldly.
"What are you going to do?" Sarah asked.
"Sunday is our official engagement party," Ethan noted. "Over two hundred guests are coming."

A slow, dangerous smile spread across his face.
"If Roxanne wants a high-society event," Ethan said, "I'm going to give her one she will never forget."
