Chapter 9 - The Calm Before the Storm

Saturday was a whirlwind of party preparations.

Caterers rushed through the estate, setting up massive floral arrangements and ice sculptures.

Roxanne—still playing the role of Victoria—was in her element, barking orders at the staff and sipping champagne.

"Make sure the caviar is perfectly chilled!" she yelled at a terrified waiter.

Sarah stayed out of her way, focusing on keeping Leo safe and out of the chaos.

Every time Sarah looked at the fake socialite, she felt a mixture of disgust and anticipation.

In the late afternoon, Ethan found Sarah in the nursery.

He was holding a small velvet box.

"I need a favor," Ethan said, looking slightly nervous.

"Anything," Sarah replied, bouncing Leo on her hip.

Ethan opened the box. Inside was a stunning, elegant sapphire necklace.

"I bought this for you," Ethan said quietly.

Sarah stepped back in surprise. "Mr. Sterling, I can't accept that."

"Ethan," he corrected her softly. "Call me Ethan."

He stepped closer, his eyes locked on hers.

"You saved my son's life, Sarah," Ethan said sincerely. "And you saved me from ruining my family."

"I was just doing my job," Sarah whispered, her heart fluttering.

"No, you were doing what was right," Ethan countered.

He took the necklace out of the box.

"I want you to wear this to the party tomorrow," he requested.

"I'm staff, Ethan," Sarah reminded him. "I shouldn't be at the party."

"Tomorrow, you are my honored guest," Ethan insisted.

He gently reached around her neck and fastened the clasp.

The cool sapphire rested against her collarbone.

"Thank you," Sarah breathed, blushing deeply.

"Get some rest," Ethan smiled. "Tomorrow is going to be explosive."
