Clare was sitting up in bed when Eleanor walked into the hospital room.
“It’s done,” Eleanor said, sitting in the chair beside the bed.
Clare closed her eyes, letting a wave of profound relief wash over her.
“Is he in custody?”
“Both of them,” Eleanor confirmed. “Bail was denied because they are flight risks.”
Clare looked out the hospital window.
The snow had stopped falling, leaving the city bright and clear.
“What happens to the company now?” Clare asked.
“The board appointed me as interim CEO,” Eleanor said softly.
“My father’s legacy isn't going to be destroyed.”
Eleanor reached into her purse and pulled out a small stack of papers.
“But I wanted to give you this.”
Clare took the papers.

Eleanor was giving Clare twenty percent of her shares in Mercer Holdings.
“Eleanor, I can't take this.”
“You saved my father's company, Clare. You gave me my family back.”
Eleanor smiled, a genuine, warm smile.
“Plus, my nephew is going to need a college fund.”
Clare touched her belly, tears welling in her eyes.
