Chapter 15 - New Beginnings

Two months later, the air in Manhattan was starting to thaw.

Clare sat in a comfortable rocking chair in a brand new, sunlit nursery.

She held a beautiful, healthy baby boy in her arms.

William.

She had named him after the grandfather who had tried to do the right thing.

The door to the nursery opened, and Eleanor walked in holding a stack of baby blankets.

“The press is finally gone from outside,” Eleanor said, setting the blankets down.

“Good,” Clare said, rocking gently.

Harrison had been sentenced to fifteen years in federal prison.

Sienna had flipped on him for a reduced sentence of three years.

Clare’s divorce had been finalized quickly, leaving Harrison with nothing but legal debt.

“Are you ready for the board meeting this afternoon?” Eleanor asked, looking at her new sister-in-law.

Clare smiled and looked down at her son.

“I think I’m going to take a few more weeks of maternity leave.”

“Take all the time you need,” Eleanor said. “The company is safe.”

Clare stood up, placing little William into his crib.

She looked around the room, feeling a sense of deep, unshakeable peace.

She had lost a husband, but she had gained a sister, a son, and her independence.
