Chapter 5 - Sienna's Mistake

While Eleanor read the letter in the back room, Clare’s phone buzzed.

It was a text from an unknown number.

He’s mine now. Stop pretending you have a marriage.

Clare stared at the screen.

Sienna Blake.

The mistress was getting impatient.

Clare typed a reply.

You can have him. But you should know he’s about to go bankrupt.

Three dots appeared instantly.

Sienna was typing.

Nice try. He just bought me a penthouse.

Clare frowned.

A penthouse?

With what money?

The Mercer company had been struggling with liquidity for months. Harrison had complained about it constantly.

Eleanor emerged from the back room, her eyes red.

“He really wrote this?”

“Yes,” Clare said. “He wanted you to have the company.”

“I don't care about the company. I just wanted him to acknowledge me.”

“He did. But Harrison hid it.”

Eleanor looked at the brass key in Clare’s hand.

“What do you want from me, Clare?”

“I want you to come to the bank. We need to open that box.”

“Why are you doing this? If I take back the company, your husband goes to jail.”

“He left me on Christmas Eve for another woman,” Clare said flatly.

“And I want him to lose everything he loves.”

Before Eleanor could answer, Clare’s phone rang.

It was Harrison.

She silenced it.

Then it rang again.

“Answer it,” Eleanor said softly.

Clare swiped the screen.

“Where are you?” Harrison demanded. His voice was frantic.

“Out,” Clare said.

“The iPad is missing from the kitchen counter. Did you take it?”

Clare remembered slipping the family iPad into her bag before she left.

“Why? Are you missing Sienna’s messages?”

“Clare, listen to me. That iPad has my company files on it. Bring it back right now.”

He wasn't angry about the affair being discovered.

He was panicked about the files.

“I’ll be home later, Harrison.”

She hung up and looked at Eleanor.

“Are you coming to the bank or not?”

May you like

Eleanor grabbed her coat.

“Let’s go.”
