Chapter 11 - The Wrath of a Syndicate Boss and the Crimson Snow

The courtyard fell into an absolute, breathless vacuum.

Marcus Vane’s assault rifle was locked, loaded, and pointed straight at the center of Adrian’s forehead.

Vane’s finger tightened against the metal trigger, his scarred face twisted into a triumphant, psychotic grin of a man who believed he was finally about to sever the head of the Moretti empire.

"Say hello to hell, Adrian," Vane sneered.

He didn't pull the trigger.

He couldn't.

A sharp, deafening crack split the air, followed instantly by the wet, sickening sound of a high-caliber round tearing through flesh and bone.

Vane’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief. The triumphant grin dissolved into a mask of sudden, hollow shock.

A dark crimson circle blossomed rapidly across the center of Vane’s tactical vest, right over his heart.

He staggered backward two steps, dropped his rifle into the dirt, and collapsed face-first onto the courtyard pavement, lifeless before he even hit the ground.

Silence rushed back into the courtyard, broken only by the distant crackle of burning pine and the frantic ringing in my ears.

Adrian didn't even look back at the sniper nest on the north ridge where the shot had undoubtedly come from.

His entire world was condensed into the space of two inches—the space between my face and his trembling hands.

"Sophia," he choked out, his voice cracking violently as he slid his arms carefully beneath my back and knees, lifting me effortlessly off the cold flagstones.

"I told you... I'm just bruised," I whispered, wincing as a sharp spike of pain radiated from my ribs. "The rocket hit the fountain, not me."

"You took a shockwave for me," Adrian growled, his jaw set in a hard, dangerous line as he carried me toward the heavy oak doors of the main house.

"You're a doctor, Sophia! You're supposed to know better than to dive in front of high-explosive ordnance!"

Despite the terrifying chaos of the war zone surrounding us, a weak, breathless laugh escaped my lips.

"Force of habit... I fix people..." I murmured, resting my head against his soot-stained shoulder as the heavy doors of the fortress closed behind us, shutting out the smoke and the gunfire.

Inside the grand foyer, Elena was already waiting, her silver hair slightly disheveled, a heavy shotgun resting comfortably in the crook of her arm.

She took one look at my pale face and Adrian’s frantic expression, and her stern facade instantly melted into raw maternal panic.

"Bring her down to the medical wing," Elena ordered, chambering a shell with a loud clack. "Marco has the north courtyard contained. Vane’s men are falling back."

Adrian carried me down the sterile, brightly lit corridors of the estate’s subterranean medical facility—a fully equipped trauma ward hidden behind the secure vaults.

He gently laid me down on the examination table, his hands hovering anxiously over my side.

"Get out," I told him, rolling my shoulders slightly to test the pain. "I'm a doctor, Adrian. Let me check my own ribs before you start operating on me like a caveman."

"No," he stated flatly, refusing to move an inch from the side of the table. "I'm staying right here."

"Adrian, I need to palpate my lower left ribs," I insisted, glaring at him through the pain. "You are blocking the light."

He swallowed hard, stepping back just enough for me to reach the diagnostic equipment, though his gray-green eyes never left my face for a single fraction of a second.

Ten minutes later, with a tightly wrapped rib binder securing a hairline fracture and a mild concussion diagnosed, I was sitting up on the examination table, holding a cup of black coffee Elena had handed me.

The heavy oak doors of the medical wing burst open.

Emma and Oliver came running down the sterile hallway at full speed, their small feet pattering against the tiled floor.

"Mommy!" Emma cried out, throwing her arms around my waist, careful not to hit my injured ribs. "The loud noises stopped! Are we safe?"

I pulled her close, burying my face in her auburn hair, breathing in the sweet scent of shampoo that grounded me in the middle of the madness.

May you like

"We're safe, sweetie," I whispered, looking up to see Adrian standing in the doorway, watching us with an expression of such fierce, unconditional love that my heart swelled.

"The bad men are gone."
