Chapter 14 - The Ultimate Threat and the Vow of a Father

The words Activating Phase Two: The Heir seemed to echo off the mahogany walls of the dining room like a death sentence.

My hands began to tremble, the emerald ring suddenly feeling heavy and cold against my finger.

"They know," I whispered, the terror I thought we had buried in the courtyard coming rushing back tenfold. "They know about Emma, Adrian."

Adrian didn't answer immediately. He stood motionless at the head of the table, his chest heaving, his fingers balling into tight fists until his knuckles turned translucent.

The cold, calculated wrath of a syndicate boss was nothing compared to the primal fury of a father whose daughter had just been marked as a target by an international cartel.

"Marco," Adrian’s voice was barely a whisper, yet it carried the terrifying weight of an impending earthquake.

"Get every encryption expert, every black-ops analyst, and every loyal enforcer we have on the secure line to Zurich right now."

"Already dialing, Boss," Marco said, his fingers flying across his tactical comms unit.

Elena pushed her chair back from the table, standing up with a look of absolute, unyielding iron in her dark eyes.

"The Directorate thinks they can reach my family by crossing the Atlantic?" Elena spat, her voice dripping with aristocratic venom.

"Let them try. We survived the Darrows. We buried Vane. We will feed the Directorate to the sharks in the Hudson before they ever lay a finger on my granddaughter."

I stood up, walking around the table to stand beside Adrian, slipping my hand into his tight, trembling fist.

"We're not running anymore," I said, my voice steady, forged in the fires of the trauma ward and the courtyard shootout.

"If they want our daughter, they have to go through both of us."

Adrian looked down at me, the terror in his eyes melting away into a profound, unbreakable devotion. He squeezed my hand back, lifting it to press a fierce kiss against my knuckles.

"They won't even make it past the Atlantic," Adrian vowed, his gray-green eyes burning with a light that could pierce the darkest night.

"I am going to dismantle the Directorate down to its final root. Every single executive, every single board member, every single ghost."

From the sunroom just down the hall, the sweet, innocent sound of children laughing drifted softly through the open doorway.

Emma and Oliver were still building their wooden castle, completely unaware that a war across oceans was currently being declared in their honor.

"Keep playing, my princess," Adrian whispered, staring down the hallway toward the sunroom with a look of absolute, lethal protection.

"Daddy's going to war."
