Chapter 5 - The Midnight Ultimatum and the Shadow at the Window

The clock on the kitchen wall ticked past 11:30 p.m.

Oliver had fallen fast asleep on the living room sofa, wrapped tightly in a spare quilt, his breathing deep and even.

Emma had finally drifted off in her own bedroom upstairs, exhausted by the emotional hurricane that had swept through our quiet townhouse.

Adrian and I stood by the kitchen window, watching the rain slowly taper off into a heavy, lingering mist that coated the deserted Queens street in silver shadows.

"You can't stay here tonight," I said quietly, breaking the silence that had stretched between us for the last half-hour. "The neighbors talk, and your enforcers parked outside draw entirely too much attention."

"My men stay where I tell them to stay," Adrian replied, his arms crossed over his chest as he leaned against the counter. "And I'm not leaving my daughter."

"Adrian, be reasonable!" I turned to face him, exasperation warring with the overwhelming terror blooming in my chest. "You can't just drop into our lives like a bomb and expect everything to fit back together!"

"I'm not expecting it to fit, Sophia. I'm going to rebuild it," he stated, his voice carrying the absolute, unyielding authority of a man who didn't know the meaning of the word defeat.

Before I could fire back a retort, the hairs on the back of my arms suddenly stood straight up.

A sharp, unnatural scratching sound echoed from the front porch.

Not a knock. Not the rain.

A scrape of metal against the windowpane.

Adrian’s body went completely rigid in a fraction of a second. The relaxed father vanished, instantly replaced by the lethal syndicate boss who lived in the crosshairs of constant war.

Without a single word, Adrian drew a heavy-caliber sidearm from his shoulder holster with terrifying speed, clicking off the safety in one fluid motion.

He motioned for me to stay back, keeping his back pressed against the wall as he crept toward the darkened living room.

I held my breath, my hand flying to my mouth as the shadow of a man flickered past the frosted glass of our front door.

Someone was out there.
