Chapter 9 - The Siege of the Hudson Fortress and the Ultimate Choice

The peace of the Hudson sunrise lasted exactly twelve minutes.
Sirens began to wail across the sprawling estate as the automated defense protocols kicked into high gear, sliding heavy steel shutters over the floor-to-ceiling glass windows and locking every reinforced bulkhead.
"Get the children down to the subterranean panic shelter!" Elena commanded, her aristocratic composure instantly shifting into the iron-willed general of a syndicate at war.
"Marco, deploy the outer perimeter mines and man the heavy machine gun nests on the north ridge!"
Adrian grabbed my arm, his gray-green eyes burning with desperate urgency. "Sophia, you need to go with them. Take Emma and Oliver down to the vault right now."
"No," I said, pulling my arm free, my voice steady and unyielding.
"Sophia, this isn't a hospital ward! This is a war zone!" he yelled over the blaring security klaxons.
"And I am a doctor!" I shouted back, grabbing his lapels. "People are going to get hurt, Adrian! Bullets tear through flesh, and I am the only trauma-trained surgeon within twenty miles of these cliffs!"
Adrian stared at me, the argument dying in his throat as he saw the absolute, unbreakable determination shining in my eyes.
He pulled me against his chest for one fierce, desperate kiss, tasting of coffee and cold adrenaline.
"Stay behind the concrete bulkheads in the central armory," he ordered, his voice breaking slightly. "If you die, I burn the world down."
"Just win," I whispered against his lips.
He turned away, drawing his sidearm as he sprinted toward the command center where Marco and Elena were coordinating the defense.
Outside the stone walls of the estate, the heavy thrum of approaching engines began to shake the ground.
Black armored vans—half a dozen of them—burst through the outer perimeter gates, smashing past the security checkpoints in a flurry of shattered glass and screaming tires.
From my position inside the central armory corridor, I watched through the secure reinforced glass as Marcus Vane’s men poured out of the vehicles, raising assault rifles and heavy explosives toward the main entrance.
The siege of the Hudson fortress had begun.
Automatic gunfire erupted into a deafening symphony of war, riddling the stone pillars with white-hot sparks and shattering the manicured courtyard gardens.
Inside the armory, Emma and Oliver sat huddled beneath a heavy oak table, clutching each other while I knelt beside them, opening a trauma kit and laying out gauze, sterile needles, and pressure bandages.
"Mommy, what's that loud noise?" Emma whimpered, pressing her hands over her ears.
"It's just fireworks, sweetie," I lied smoothly, forcing a gentle, maternal smile onto my face while my hands shook as I loaded a syringe of local anesthetic. "Just stay right here with Oliver and draw your dragons."
The heavy oak doors of the armory suddenly burst open.
A Moretti enforcer stumbled backward into the room, clutching a bloody, mangled shoulder, his rifle clattering against the concrete floor.

"Dr. Sophia!" he choked out, collapsing against the wall. "We got wounded in the north courtyard! A mortar shell hit the guard tower!"
I didn't hesitate. I grabbed my medical bag, stepped past the barricade, and ran straight out into the roaring gunfire of the war zone.
