Chapter 7 - The Safehouse Migration and the Tears of a Mother

By 2:00 a.m., our quiet Queens townhouse looked like a military staging ground.

Three black SUVs lined the street, their hazard lights blinking against the misty pavement, while half a dozen syndicate enforcers in plainclothes secured the perimeter and carried our belongings out the front door.

Oliver was still fast asleep, carried in the arms of one of Adrian’s most trusted guards, wrapped securely in his blanket.

Emma, however, had woken up when the commotion started.

She stood in the center of the living room, clutching her dragon drawing to her chest, her big blue eyes wide with confusion and rising panic.

"Mommy? Where are we going? Why are men in our house?" she asked, her voice trembling as she looked at the unfamiliar faces packing our suitcases into the back of an Escalade.

I knelt down in front of her, forcing a bright, trembling smile onto my face as I gently smoothed her auburn hair.

"Hey, sweetie," I said, fighting back the lump of tears in my throat. "We're going on an adventure. Just a little trip to a new house."

"Is it because of the bad man outside?" she whispered, her smart little eyes catching the sight of the police tape Marco was quietly stringing across the front porch to deter local nosey neighbors.

My heart shattered. She was only six, but she had lived on the fringes of a world she shouldn't even know existed.

"Everything is going to be okay, Emma," a deep, steady voice interrupted gently.

Adrian walked over, kneeling beside me on the hardwood floor. He looked at our daughter with a reverence that melted away the terrifying mafia boss exterior entirely.

"Your mom and I are going to take care of you, princess. I promise you, nobody will ever scare you in our new home."

Emma studied Adrian’s face for a long moment, tracing the familiar lines of his jaw and the dimple in his cheek before asking the question that broke my heart completely.

"Are you the daddy who's going to stay?" she whispered.

Adrian swallowed hard, a fresh wave of emotion flashing across his gray-green eyes. He reached out, gently cupping her cheek with his large, warm hand.

"Forever," he vowed, his voice thick with absolute conviction. "I'm never leaving again."

Ten minutes later, we were sealed inside the bulletproof cabin of Adrian’s primary transport vehicle, pulling away from the Queens townhouse that had been our sanctuary for six years.

As the familiar streetlights faded into the rainy distance, I rested my head against the cold glass window, watching the blur of the highway lights.

I had lost my home. I had lost my anonymity.

And yet, as Adrian’s hand reached across the center console to intertwine his fingers with mine, holding on with a desperate, unbreakable grip, I realized something terrifying.

For the first time in six years, I didn't feel entirely alone in the dark.
