Chapter 12 - The Aftermath of the Storm and the Cleanup of Vane’s Legacy

By late afternoon, the sprawling grounds of the Hudson estate were eerily quiet.

The smoke from the north courtyard had cleared, replaced by the humming efficiency of Moretti cleanup crews scrubbing the flagstones and towing away the wreckage of Vane’s armored vans.

Inside the grand library, the fire crackled warmly in the massive stone hearth, casting a golden glow across the leather-bound books and the Persian rugs.

I sat on the edge of the leather sofa, a heavy woolen blanket draped over my shoulders, sipping chamomile tea while Dr. Gable—the same pediatrician who had examined my kids years ago—checked my rib binder one last time.

"You're lucky it was just a hairline fracture, Dr. Sophia," Dr. Gable said professionally, packing his stethoscope back into his leather bag. "Another inch to the left, and that concussive blast would have punctured a lung."

"I've survived worse, doctor," I replied with a dry, tired smile. "Thank you for coming on such short notice."

"When Adrian Moretti calls and says his family is under attack, you don't ask questions, you pack your bags," the doctor chuckled softly, nodding to Adrian, who stood silently by the window.

After Dr. Gable left the room, the heavy oak doors clicked shut, leaving just the two of us—and the quiet breathing of Emma and Oliver playing softly in the adjacent sunroom under Elena’s watchful eye.

Adrian turned away from the window, walking slowly across the room until he stopped right in front of me.

He dropped heavily to one knee—the exact same position he had held the night before when he discovered he had a six-year-old daughter.

"Adrian, what are you doing?" I asked, my heart skipping a beat as I set my teacup down on the side table.

He reached into the inside pocket of his dark blazer, pulling out a small, velvet black box.

My breath caught in my throat.

"Six years ago, I lost the only woman I ever wanted to spend the rest of my life with," Adrian began, his voice thick with emotion, his gray-green eyes glistening with unshed tears.

"I spent every single day of those six years thinking I was living in a nightmare, never knowing that a piece of my soul was out there growing up without her father."

He popped the lid of the velvet box open.

Inside rested a breathtaking, custom-designed ring—a stunning, deep-green emerald surrounded by a halo of brilliant-cut diamonds, catching the firelight like a beacon.

"Sophia," he whispered, looking up at me with an absolute, terrifying vulnerability that only I was privileged to see.

"I know the world I live in is dark. I know the shadows follow me wherever I go. But I also know that my life means nothing without you and our daughter."

A single tear broke free from my lashes, tracing a clean path down my cheek as I stared at the ring.

"Adrian... we just survived a literal war zone twenty minutes ago," I managed a watery, breathless laugh. "Are you really proposing to me in the middle of a syndicate fortress?"

"There is no better time to remind ourselves what we're fighting for," he answered softly, his thumb gently wiping away my tear.

"Marry me, Sophia. Let me give you the home you deserved six years ago. Let me protect our family in the light, where we never have to hide again."

I looked down at the ring, then up at his face—the face of the man who had torn apart an empire just to keep us safe, the man who looked at me like I hung the stars in the sky.

I didn't hesitate.

"Yes," I whispered, the word slipping out of my soul like a prayer. "Yes, Adrian. I'll marry you."

May you like

A massive sigh of relief escaped his chest. He slid the emerald ring onto my finger, and as the cold metal settled against my skin, it felt like the final, broken piece of my heart finally clicked into place.

He stood up, pulling me gently into his arms, kissing me with a fierce, tender desperation that made the rest of the world completely disappear.
