Chapter 13 - The Patriarch’s Legacy and the Shadows of the Past

Two weeks later, the Hudson estate was bathed in the warm, golden light of early autumn.

The repairs to the north courtyard were complete, the bullet holes in the stone pillars expertly polished away, and the security grid upgraded to a level of tactical fortification that made even Marco nod in approval.

Inside the grand dining room, the heavy mahogany table was set for dinner, laughter echoing from the sunroom where Emma and Oliver were busy building an elaborate castle out of wooden blocks.

I sat at the head of the table, wearing a simple, elegant ivory dress, the emerald engagement ring catching the light with every movement of my hand.

Adrian sat to my right, his hand resting securely over mine, while Elena sat opposite us, sipping a glass of vintage red wine with an expression of quiet, uncharacteristic contentment.

"The federal prosecutor officially closed Vane’s file this morning," Elena announced, swirling her wine glass gently.

"All remaining assets belonging to the Vipers have been seized and transferred to the Sterling-Moretti Foundation for pediatric research."

I looked up, a bright smile crossing my face. "Pediatric research? That’s… that’s incredible, Elena. Thank you."

"Don't thank me, Dr. Sophia," the matriarch replied, offering a rare, genuine smile that softened her stern features.

"You saved my son's life in that courtyard. The least I can do is fund the hospital where you spent six years keeping my granddaughter safe."

Before I could answer, the heavy double doors of the dining room swung open, and Marco stepped inside, holding a thick, encrypted tablet with a grim expression on his face.

The lighthearted atmosphere in the room instantly evaporated.

Adrian dropped his hand from mine, straightening his posture as the syndicate boss re-emerged from beneath the veneer of the contented fiancé.

"Report, Marco," Adrian commanded quietly.

Marco stepped closer to the table, laying the tablet flat on the mahogany surface.

"Cyber unit just intercepted an encrypted data packet originating from a secure server in Geneva, Switzerland," Marco reported, his voice tight.

"It wasn't addressed to Vane. And it wasn't addressed to the Darrows."

"Who was it addressed to?" I asked, a cold knot suddenly tightening in my stomach.

Marco looked up, locking his hard eyes onto Adrian.

"It was addressed to The Syndicate Directorate—the shadowy oversight board that controls the European cartels."

Adrian stood up slowly from his chair, his gray-green eyes darkening into lethal slits as he stared down at the tablet screen.

"What did the packet say?" Adrian asked, his voice dropping into that terrifying, low register.

Marco tapped the screen, pulling up the translated text of the intercepted Zurich transmission:

“Target Moretti neutralized locally? Negative. Vane eliminated. Activating Phase Two: The Heir.”

The silence that followed was absolute, heavy, and suffocating.

My breath hitched in my throat.

The Heir.

They weren't gunning for Adrian anymore. They weren't trying to tear down his shipping lanes or seize his warehouses.

They knew about Emma.

They knew about the six-year-old girl with gray-green eyes who carried the Moretti bloodline into the quiet streets of Queens.
