Chapter 3 - THE POLICE ARRIVE

The doorbell rang, cutting through the tense atmosphere of the house. Evelyn glanced at the clock, a rare flicker of confusion crossing her face. Claire knew who it was. She had made a call earlier that day, a call that could shatter everything. Two uniformed officers stood on the doorstep, their presence stark against the opulent entryway.
Evelyn straightened her coat, her face returning to that familiar, icy mask. "How can I help you?" she asked, her voice dripping with artificial politeness.
"Ma'am," the lead officer began, "we’ve received a report of child endangerment and potential financial elder abuse involving this residence."
Evelyn’s eyes narrowed, then drifted toward Claire, who stood behind her, cradling Lily. The look she gave Claire was venomous. "This is a private family matter," Evelyn stated, attempting to dismiss them with a wave of her hand.
"Not when it involves the welfare of a minor," the officer countered, stepping inside. Claire stepped forward, her voice steady now. "I have proof, Officer. She has been systematically abusing my daughter, denying her medical equipment, and misappropriating the trust funds to further her own agenda."

Evelyn laughed, a brittle, hollow sound. "She’s unstable, Officer. Look at her."
"I am not unstable," Claire said, looking directly at the officer. "I am a mother fighting for her child’s life. Please, check the basement. Check the safe." The power dynamic had shifted. Evelyn’s grip on the world was slipping, and for the first time in years, she looked truly, deeply afraid.
