Chapter 7 - THE HIDDEN SECRETS

As the dust began to settle, a new challenge emerged. While sorting through Evelyn’s personal effects, Claire discovered a locked cabinet in the attic. Inside were not just financial records, but deeply personal items—letters, journals, and a set of photographs that suggested Evelyn’s own upbringing had been just as traumatic as what she had inflicted on Lily.

Evelyn had been the daughter of a similarly cold and controlling mother. The cycle of trauma was evident. It didn't excuse her actions, but it provided a terrifying insight into the monster she had become. Claire felt a complicated mix of anger and something bordering on pity.

But there was more. The files also contained evidence of past illegal activities—blackmail, extortion, and secret accounts used to fund illicit ventures. If this information went public, it wouldn't just ruin Evelyn; it would destroy the reputations of many powerful people who had been complicit in her schemes.

Evelyn reached out, a final, desperate plea for a meeting. She knew what was in those files. "If you reveal that, you'll destroy more than just me," she whispered, her voice cracking. "You'll destroy the future of everyone we know."

It was a test. Would Claire hold the moral high ground, or would she use the information as a weapon, just as Evelyn would have?
