Chapter 4 - THE GATHERING STORM

The investigation moved quickly. The police found the documents, the hidden cameras Claire had installed, and the medical records that had been altered by Evelyn to hide the true extent of Lily’s needs. The house, once a fortress of privilege, was now a crime scene. Social workers arrived, their faces grim.
Evelyn was sequestered in her study, pacing, making phone calls to lawyers who were no longer answering. The media began to circle. A story about the "Gilded Dynasty" falling into disgrace was too juicy for the local news to ignore. Claire watched from a distance, feeling a strange mix of liberation and terror.
Lily was safely tucked away in a temporary foster home, waiting for the legal process to grant Claire full custody and control over the trust, which had been frozen by the courts. The isolation was difficult, but for the first time, they were free. Claire spent her days consulting with lawyers and preparing to testify.

Evelyn, meanwhile, was becoming increasingly erratic. She was seen arguing with her lawyers in public, throwing tantrums, and trying to leverage her remaining influence to crush the case against her. But the tide had turned. The story was everywhere, and public opinion was firmly on Claire and Lily's side.
