Chapter 5 - THE COURTROOM BATTLE

The trial was a circus. The media packed the courtroom, cameras flashing, reporters hanging on every word. Claire sat at the plaintiff's table, her back straight, her resolve absolute. Evelyn sat across from her, looking smaller, more fragile than ever, though her eyes still held that dangerous, cold spark.
The testimony was brutal. Claire laid it all out: the isolation, the abuse, the systematic attempts to break Lily's spirit for the sake of appearances. She testified about the chair, about the food, about the psychological games. When it was her turn to speak, Evelyn painted herself as the victim—a misunderstood matriarch trying to protect her family legacy.
"It was for their own good," Evelyn claimed, tears welling in her eyes, a performance that fell flat on the jury. "They wouldn't understand the pressures of this family."

Claire watched as the jury listened, their faces unreadable. But then, it was time for the evidence—the documents Claire had found in the safe, the recordings of Evelyn mocking Lily’s disability. The tone of the room shifted. You could hear a pin drop.
Evelyn’s lawyer tried to object, to discredit the evidence, but it was too late. The truth was out, raw and unfiltered. Claire looked over at Evelyn, who for the first time, wouldn't meet her eyes. The power was finally, irrevocably gone.
