Chapter 11 - The Ghost of Zurich and the Dark Legacy of the Vances

The name Viktor Vance hung in the sterilized air of the executive office like a curse, freezing the warmth right out of the morning sunlight.

Elena stared at the black vellum paper, the blood-red ink seeming to pulse under the harsh glare of the desk lamp.

"Viktor Vance?" she whispered, her voice barely louder than a breath.

"Christian never spoke of an uncle. In all the private journals, in all the corporate archives, that name was completely scrubbed."

Julian walked around the edge of the glass desk, his hands shoved deep into the pockets of his tailored trousers, his face carved from cold, hard stone.

"Because Viktor wasn't just banished to Zurich; he was erased," Julian explained, his voice low and tightly controlled.

"Before my grandfather died, Viktor ran the black-ops logistics wing of the syndicate—smuggling, extortion, and corporate assassinations disguised as industrial accidents. He was too violent even for the Vance family, so they locked him away in an alpine psychiatric facility under an assumed identity."

Elena looked up from the photograph of her late father, her heart hammering a frantic, deafening rhythm against her ribs.

"And now he's out," she stated flatly, the horrifying realization dawning on her.

"He didn't just escape, Julian. He came back for the company, and he blames both my father and the Vance dynasty for stealing his empire."

Julian nodded grimly, stepping closer to the desk and placing a reassuring hand over her trembling fingers.

"We need to step up security immediately," Julian said, his voice laced with absolute urgency.

"I'll have private tactical guards stationed outside this penthouse twenty-four hours a day, and I'm moving you to a secure safehouse downtown until we track him down."

Elena pulled her hand away slowly, standing up from her leather chair with a sudden, fierce flash of defiance in her dark eyes.

"No," she said, her voice ringing clear and steady across the room.

"I spent four years hiding in Christian's shadow, and I spent the last week dodging federal investigations just to claim what is mine. I am not running from a ghost."

"Elena, this isn't Christian," Julian warned, his voice rising in frustration.

"Viktor doesn't care about lawsuits, corporate buyouts, or board meetings. He plays with explosives and body counts."

"Then we play his game," Elena retorted, picking up the black vellum paper and the half-burnt photograph with absolute composure.

"He wants to terrorize me? Fine. Let him come to the citadel. We'll be waiting."
