Chapter 13 - The Siege of the Thirty-Second Floor

The emergency red backup lights kicked on, bathing the boardroom in a bloody, pulsating glow that made the shadows stretch like reaching claws.

Outside the heavy mahogany doors, the faint sounds of muffled shouting and the dull, heavy thud of hand-to-hand combat echoed down the silent hallway.

"Stay behind the conference table," Julian commanded in a harsh, low whisper, stepping defensively between Elena and the entrance.

Elena didn't hide. She grabbed a heavy brass paperweight from the obsidian desk, her knuckles turning white as she kept her eyes fixed on the reinforced wooden doors.

Bang.

A single, muffled gunshot ripped through the silence outside.

Then, absolute, terrifying quiet returned to the floor.

For thirty agonizing seconds, nobody moved.

Slowly, the heavy mahogany doors creaked open, the brass handle turning with a soft, deliberate click.

A tall, imposing figure stepped into the red-lit boardroom.

He wore a heavy woolen overcoat, his silver hair slightly unkempt, a jagged, pale scar cutting across his left cheek down to his collarbone.

Viktor Vance.

He didn't look like a lunatic escaped from an asylum; he looked like an aristocratic general inspecting a conquered territory.

In his right hand, he casually twirled a heavy, solid-brass detonator switch.

"Julian, my brilliant, rebellious nephew," Viktor purred, his voice a smooth, gravelly baritone that chilled the air in the room.

"And you must be the little archivist who took down my pathetic nephew. I must admit, I expected someone much older. Or at least someone less... fragile."

Julian raised his suppressed pistol, locking the laser sight directly onto the center of Viktor’s chest.

"Drop the detonator, Viktor," Julian commanded, his voice shaking with restrained rage.

"One step closer and I put a bullet through your heart."

Viktor laughed—a dry, booming sound that held no humor whatsoever.

"Shoot me, and the charges planted on the structural columns of levels ten, twenty, and thirty will detonate simultaneously," Viktor smiled calmly, tilting his head.

"You'll bury us all beneath fifty floors of concrete and steel."
