Chapter 6 - The Shattered Empire and the Aftermath in the Citadel

The heavy glass doors of the boardroom clicked shut behind the federal marshals, leaving behind a room choked with the thick, suffocating silence of absolute devastation.

The twelve senior board members sat frozen in their leather chairs, their eyes darting nervously between each other like trapped animals realizing the cage had just caught fire.

Vanessa Sterling stood near the edge of the conference table, her manicured hands trembling violently as she clutched her designer handbag like a life raft in a sinking sea.

"This... this is a mistake," Vanessa stammered, her voice lacking any of its former venom, reduced to a pathetic, high-pitched whimper.

"Christian will be out by tonight. The board will issue a press release denying all allegations."

Elena didn't even look at her.

She slowly straightened the legal folders on the obsidian table, her movements calm, deliberate, and utterly terrifying in their composure.

"There will be no press release denying anything, Vanessa," Elena said, her voice dropping into a low, calm cadence that commanded the entire room's attention.

"As of five minutes ago, by unanimous proxy vote of the emergency minority shareholders—led by Julian Vance—I have been appointed interim Chief Executive Officer of Vance Enterprises."

A collective gasp echoed around the room.

Chairman Harrison, the oldest and most respected member of the board, slowly stood up from his chair, his weathered face etched with deep shock and newfound respect.

"Ms. Vance... forgive me, Elena," Harrison began, bowing his head slightly.

"None of us were aware of Christian's fraudulent activities. We pledge our full cooperation with the federal investigators and your executive leadership."

Elena finally raised her gaze, locking her piercing eyes onto Chairman Harrison.

"I know you weren't aware, Harrison," Elena replied steadily.

"Which is why you still have a seat at this table. But make no mistake—the rot stops today. Anyone found to have aided or covered up Christian's embezzlement will be terminated and handed over to federal prosecutors before the sun sets."

She then turned her cold, analytical gaze toward Vanessa Sterling, who shrank back under the sheer weight of Elena's presence.

"As for you, Vanessa," Elena murmured, stepping slowly around the edge of the table until she was standing inches away from the trembling mistress.

"Your corporate expense account is canceled, your PR contract is voided, and your access badge has been permanently deactivated. You have ten minutes to clear your desk before building security escorts you out onto the street."

Vanessa’s lips parted in pure outrage, her face turning crimson with humiliation.

"You can't do this to me!" Vanessa screamed, losing her composure entirely.

"I am a public figure! I will destroy you in the press!"

"Try," Elena whispered with a chilling, radiant smile.

"Let's see how much the tabloids care about a socialite when her bank accounts are frozen and her name is linked to a federal RICO indictment."

Without waiting for another word, Vanessa turned and bolted from the boardroom, her high heels clicking frantically against the marble floor as she fled in absolute disgrace.

Elena stood at the head of the table, looking out over the panoramic view of the Manhattan skyline through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows.

The city that had once felt like a gilded cage was now hers.
