Chapter 9 - The Unseen Enemy in the Dark

Deep within the industrial shipping yards on the outskirts of New Jersey, far away from the glittering skyscrapers of Manhattan, a single overhead yard light flickered against the driving rain.

Inside a dimly lit, damp warehouse filled with stacked wooden crates, a figure stood smoking a thick Cuban cigar in the shadows.

The man wore a heavy woolen overcoat, his face obscured by the hood and the darkness, illuminated only by the occasional red glow of his cigar.

"He's finished," a voice whispered from the darkness near the doorway.

A nervous-looking man in a cheap polyester suit stepped forward, clutching a battered leather briefcase to his chest.

"Christian Vance was transferred upstate an hour ago. His wife—Elena Vance—has taken full control of the enterprise. The federal investigations are closing in on all our secondary shell accounts."

The man in the shadows didn't move.

He took a slow, deliberate drag from his cigar, blowing a thick ring of gray smoke into the damp air.

"Elena Vance," the deep, gravelly voice echoed softly through the empty warehouse, carrying a sinister, melodic cadence that sounded like a death sentence.

"They think because they locked up Christian, they won the war."

"What do you want us to do, boss?" the man in the suit asked, his voice trembling with fear.

"Should we liquidate the remaining assets and run?"

The man in the shadows stepped forward out of the darkness, the dim amber light finally catching his face—revealing a jagged, pale scar running from his left ear down to his collarbone, and eyes that burned with a psychopathic, unhinged brilliance.

"Run?" the scarred man laughed softly, a dry, terrifying sound.

"We don't run from a little girl playing CEO."

He reached out, snatching the battered leather briefcase from the trembling man’s hands and snapping open the brass latches.

Inside rested stacks of explosive detonators and encrypted communication arrays.

"Christian was a blunt instrument—loud, arrogant, and easily manipulated," the scarred man murmured, his fingers trailing over the cold metal of a detonator.

"His wife thinks she's a master strategist because she outplayed a fool."

He slammed the briefcase shut, the loud snap echoing sharply off the corrugated metal walls.

"Let her enjoy her penthouse office for a few more days. When I take down Vance Enterprises, I won't just freeze her bank accounts. I'm going to burn the entire building to the ground with her inside it."
