Chapter 10 - The Pier Fire and the Midnight Vow

The night did not end in the glittering ballroom of the conservatory.
At 1:15 AM, while Dominic’s motorcade was traveling back toward the Westchester estate along the elevated shoreline expressway, three warning alarms shrieked simultaneously on Penelope’s secure tablet.
Penelope tapped the screen rapidly, her face turning pale as she viewed the real-time satellite imagery.
“Dominic, the northern fuel depot at Pier 12 is on fire!” she exclaimed, showing him the infrared heat maps blooming over the riverfront.
“The automated fire-suppression systems have been remotely shut down from an external IP address!”
Dominic stared at the blooming red thermal signatures on the screen, his tactical mind instantly dissecting the maneuver.
“It’s a diversion,” Dominic said coldly.
“Leone set fire to the fuel depot to pull our tactical units away from our primary compound.”
“He knows Vincent’s digital accounts are being wiped tonight, and he’s trying to force my enforcers into a two-front battle.”
“Wait,” Penelope gasped, her eyes scanning another incoming alert.
“Dominic, someone just triggered an emergency access protocol at your private estate vault five minutes ago!”
Dominic grabbed his encrypted comms device, slamming his fist against the leather armrest of the armored limousine.
“All escort vehicles, change route immediately!” Dominic roared into the microphone.
“We are turning back to the estate at maximum speed!”
The four-car motorcade executed a synchronized, screeching drift across the wet expressway lanes, tires smoking as they accelerated toward the Westchester hills.
When they arrived at the iron gates of the Russo estate fifteen minutes later, the compound was engulfed in shadows.
The primary power grid had been cut, and the perimeter floodlights were dead.
Two of Dominic’s outer perimeter guards lay unconscious on the gravel driveway, their weapons stripped.
Dominic drew his .45, stepping out of the car before it had even come to a complete halt.
“Penelope, stay behind the armored door!” Dominic commanded, but Penelope was already out of the passenger seat, gripping a heavy tactical flashlight from the door pocket.
“The vault access code Vincent used requires two-factor authentication from the master server inside the library!” she insisted, running low behind him toward the side entrance.
“If Leone’s strike team is trying to extract the physical ledgers, they have to be in the east wing right now!”
They breached the heavy oak side doors of the mansion, moving silently through the dark corridors illuminated only by flashes of lightning from the returning storm.
Inside the vast two-story library, a lone intruder dressed in black tactical gear was crouched before the floor safe behind Dominic’s desk.
The beam of Penelope’s flashlight hit the intruder’s face, revealing not a stranger, but Silvio’s personal bodyguard, Marco.
The old capo had sent his own muscle to erase his offshore banking records before Dominic could execute the tribunal.
Marco spun around, raising a silenced pistol directly toward Penelope’s chest.
“Penelope, down!” Dominic shouted, throwing his entire body across the open space between them.
A sharp, muffled crack echoed through the library as the bullet tore through the air.
Dominic slammed into Penelope, knocking her behind the heavy mahogany desk just as the round splintered the woodwork an inch above her head.
Before Marco could adjust his aim for a second shot, Dominic fired twice through the darkness with terrifying accuracy.
Both rounds struck Marco in the center of his chest, hurling him backward against the glass display cases, which shattered into a thousand glittering pieces.
Silence descended upon the library, save for the sound of their ragged, synchronized breathing.
Dominic remained crouched over Penelope, his broad body completely shielding her from any potential secondary fire.
His hands gripped her shoulders, his breathing heavy, his dark eyes frantically searching her face for any signs of injury.
“Did he hit you?” Dominic demanded, his voice thick with raw, undisguised panic for the first time since she had walked into his office.
“Are you hurt, Penelope?”
Penelope looked up into his fierce, terrified gaze, feeling the heavy, frantic pounding of his heart against her chest.
The untouchable mafia king of the city was trembling, not from fear of dying, but from the sheer terror of losing her.
“I’m okay, Dominic,” she whispered softly, her hand reaching up to touch the side of his jaw.
“I’m not hurt.”
Dominic closed his eyes for a single, shuddering second, letting out a ragged breath against her forehead.
He buried his face into the curve of her neck, pulling her tight against his chest in an embrace so fierce and possessive it took her breath away.
“You are never leaving my side again,” Dominic vowed against her skin, his voice vibrating with absolute, unshakeable conviction.
“I don’t care about the ledgers, I don’t care about the ships, and I don’t care about the war.”
“You are mine now, Penelope.”
“And I will tear this entire city apart before I ever let anyone put you in danger again.”
May you like
Penelope wrapped her arms around his neck, holding onto the man who had become her protector, her partner, and her salvation amidst the darkness.
The storm raged outside against the estate windows, but inside the shattered library, the line between an arranged mafia alliance and real, unyielding passion had officially ceased to exist.
