Chapter 8 - The Assembly of the Blood Council

By 3:00 AM, the executive boardroom on the top floor of the Russo ancestral estate in Westchester was filled with heavy smoke and dangerous men.

A long banquet table of dark Italian walnut was surrounded by seven regional capos and two aging family elders who had governed the syndicate for decades.

At the head of the table sat Dominic Russo, his black suit immaculate once more, though the tension radiating from his posture was palpable.

Sitting immediately to his right, in the seat traditionally reserved for the underboss, was Penelope Hayes.

She wore a high-collared navy silk blouse, her dark hair pulled back into an elegant knot, looking every bit like an executive ready for an audit.

Yet the heavy gazes of the old men around the table were fixed on her with open skepticism and simmering hostility.

Uncle Silvio, the oldest living capo in the Russo bloodline, slammed his wrinkled, ring-covered hand onto the polished table.

“This is an insult to the traditions of this family, Dominic!” Silvio shouted, his thick gravelly voice trembling with outrage.

“You lock Vincent Moretti in a concrete basement without a tribunal, and you drag a desk accountant into our inner sanctum?”

“Worse, you let her sit in the underboss’s chair wearing your late mother’s ring!”

A low rumble of agreement echoed among the other capos around the table, their expressions cold and defensive.

Penelope felt the crushing pressure of nine powerful mob leaders staring through her, but she refused to lower her eyes.

She had spent years navigating boardroom sharks and corrupt corporate auditors; these men just carried bigger weapons.

Dominic didn't raise his voice to counter his uncle's explosive outburst.

He simply leaned back in his leather chair, swirling two ice cubes in a tumbler of bourbon with agonizing slowness.

“My mother’s ring was stolen by the very underboss you championed three years ago, Silvio,” Dominic stated, every syllable dripping with cold malice.

“Vincent didn't just steal my family’s property; he entered into a secret partnership with Lorenzo Leone.”

“He attempted to use our logistics lines to smuggle illegal munitions, and he tried to frame Penelope for the entire operation.”

Silvio sneered, waving his hand dismissively through the thick cigar smoke.

“Accusations and rumors!” Silvio barked.

“Where is the tangible proof?”

“You expect this council to authorize an all-out blood war against the Leone syndicate based on the word of a frightened girl from accounting?”

Dominic glanced sideways at Penelope, nodding once.

“Show them, Penelope,” Dominic said calmly.

Penelope didn't hesitate.

She reached down, opening her slim leather portfolio and distributing ten identical spiral-bound dossiers across the mahogany table.

“On page four, you will find the wire transfers routed from Leone Holdings to a shell company registered in Zurich under the name 'Caelum Ventures,'” Penelope began, her voice ringing with absolute professional authority.

“The beneficial owner of Caelum Ventures is Vincent Moretti.”

“On page seven, you will see the cross-referenced GPS tracking logs from Pier 44, matching the transport times to Leone’s private warehouses in New Jersey.”

“And on page twelve,” Penelope continued, locking her gaze directly onto Uncle Silvio’s widening eyes, “you will find three personal kickbacks paid into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands.”

“An account registered under the maiden name of your sister, Silvio.”

The entire boardroom fell into a dead, suffocating silence so intense that the ticking of the grandfather clock sounded like a sledgehammer.

Silvio’s face flushed a deep, violent crimson, his breath catching in his throat as the other capos turned their suspicious glares toward him.

“You… you insolent little bitch!” Silvio stammered, half-rising from his chair with his fist clenched.

Before Silvio could take another breath, Dominic’s hand flashed across the table, grabbing an ornate silver letter opener and burying it an inch deep into the wood right between Silvio’s fingers.

The old capo froze in absolute terror, his knuckles shaking inches from the trembling steel blade.

“Touch her, speak to her like that again, or even breathe in her direction without respect,” Dominic whispered, his eyes pitch-black with murderous intent, “and I will carve your heart out right in front of this council.”

Dominic stood up, towering over the entire assembly of hardened criminals.

“Penelope Hayes uncovered a conspiracy that would have put every single man at this table behind federal bars or in an unmarked grave.”

“She saved this family from within.”

“From this hour forward, her word is my word, her audits are law, and anyone who questions her loyalty answers to my blade.”

Dominic looked around the room, meeting the terrified, submissive gazes of each capo one by one.

“Are there any further objections regarding her seat at this table?” Dominic demanded.

Not a single man spoke.

Uncle Silvio slowly pulled his trembling hand away from the buried letter opener, slumping back into his leather chair with his head bowed.

Dominic looked down at Penelope, offering his hand with a faint, imperceptible smile.

“Let’s prepare for the evening gala, Penelope,” Dominic said smoothly.

“It’s time to show Lorenzo Leone what happens when his investments go up in smoke.”
