Chapter 11 - The Reckoning of Uncle Silvio and the Ghost Accounts

The acrid stench of gunpowder lingered heavily in the damp night air of the estate library.
Marco’s lifeless body lay sprawled across the broken glass of the display cabinet, dark blood pooling slowly against the Persian rug.
Dominic kept one arm wrapped firmly around Penelope’s waist until his personal security detachment stormed through the double doors with weapons drawn.
The tactical team secured the perimeter within seconds, clearing the shadows and securing every entrance to the Westchester mansion.
“Get this trash out of my sight and burn his vehicle,” Dominic commanded, his voice trembling with a terrifying, subdued rage.
Two guards dragged the fallen hitman through the service corridor, leaving behind only shattered timber and splintered glass.
Dominic knelt down beside Penelope, his large hands carefully inspecting her arms, shoulders, and ribs for any hidden graze or splinter.
“I am completely unharmed, Dominic,” Penelope murmured, her hand gently covering his scarred knuckles to still his trembling fingers.
“He was aiming for your chest, Penelope,” Dominic whispered, his dark eyes burning with fierce protectiveness.
“If I had been a fraction of a second slower, you would have bled out on this floor.”
“You weren’t slower,” she said softly, looking straight into his eyes without flinching.
“You took the bullet for me, and you saved my life.”
Dominic pulled her to her feet, holding her against his chest for another lingering moment before stepping toward the safe.
The heavy iron door of the floor safe hung open, revealing a hidden compartment beneath the false bottom.
Penelope stepped beside him, pulling on a pair of latex gloves from her pocket and kneeling before the metal cavity.
Inside sat a water-damaged black leather binder and a specialized military-grade encrypted storage unit.
“This isn’t just company paperwork,” Penelope noted, blowing dust from the surface of the hardware.
“This is the original ghost ledger my predecessor kept before she disappeared four years ago.”
“Vincent told everyone she took an executive severance package and moved to Switzerland,” Dominic growled.
“She didn't move anywhere,” Penelope said, pointing to handwritten annotations in the margins of the paper ledger.
“She discovered that Uncle Silvio and Vincent were siphoning off port tariffs and routing the capital directly into Leone’s private arms accounts.”
Dominic pulled out his phone, dialing the head of his estate security with a single, violent tap.
“Bring Silvio to the library immediately,” Dominic ordered, his tone devoid of mercy.
“If he resists, break both of his kneecaps and drag him across the lawn.”
Ten minutes later, the heavy library doors opened once more.
Two enforcers shoved Uncle Silvio into the room, forcing the aging capo down onto his knees in front of the shattered desk.
Silvio wore a silk bathrobe over his pajamas, his face pale and glistening with cold sweat.
He looked at the puddle of Marco’s blood on the Persian rug and choked back a terrified gasp.
“Dominic, my boy, what is the meaning of this madness?” Silvio stammered, raising his trembling hands in defense.
“You murdered Marco, my loyal driver, in your own house!”
“Marco died trying to put a hollow-point bullet through Penelope’s heart,” Dominic answered, stepping forward until the toe of his leather shoe touched Silvio’s knee.
“And he was trying to retrieve this black ledger on your explicit orders.”
Silvio’s eyes darted toward the leather binder in Penelope’s hands, and the color drained completely from his lips.
“She forged that!” Silvio cried out, his voice cracking with desperation.
“She’s an outsider, Dominic!”
“She’s poisoning your mind against your own flesh and blood to steal our legacy!”
Penelope stepped forward, opening the ledger and holding it directly before Silvio’s wide, terrified eyes.
“Your personal signature is on twelve wire authorizations dated between 2023 and 2025, Silvio,” Penelope stated with surgical precision.
“You authorized the release of shipping containers carrying illegal military ordnance through Pier 44.”
“You accepted three million dollars in Leone bearer bonds deposited into your sister’s offshore account.”
“And you paid Marco fifty thousand dollars yesterday afternoon to execute me before the morning sun rose.”
Silvio fell silent, his jaw quivering as the undeniable evidence suffocated his lies.
Dominic drew his .45 from his shoulder holster, the click of the hammer sounding like a thunderclap in the quiet room.
“Dominic, please!” Silvio begged, tears streaming down his wrinkled cheeks as he bowed his head toward the floor.
“I am your father’s brother!”
“The blood of the Russo founders runs in my veins!”
“My father would have executed you himself for handing our docks to a Leone,” Dominic said in an icy whisper.
Dominic lowered the weapon, pressing the cold barrel lightly against the center of Silvio’s forehead.
Penelope placed a gentle, steadying hand on Dominic’s forearm, not to stop him out of weakness, but out of calculated strategy.
“Dominic, don't execute him in this library,” Penelope said calmly, her voice piercing the heavy tension.
“If he dies right now, Leone learns that his inside line is permanently severed before we can use it against him.”
“Strip Silvio of every title, every asset, every account, and every square inch of family territory.”
“Make him sign over the offshore trust funds to Russo Logistics, and let him spend the rest of his pathetic life locked in the estate guesthouse under armed guard.”
Dominic looked down at Penelope, seeing the cold, brilliant strategic mind that balanced his raw fury.
He slowly lowered the handgun, stepping back from his groveling uncle with unmasked revulsion.
“You heard her,” Dominic told the two enforcers.
“Strip him of his watch, his phone, his rings, and his freedom.”
“If he takes a single step outside the perimeter of the south cottage, put a bullet in his skull.”
The guards hauled the weeping old man to his feet and dragged him into the darkness of the hallway.
Dominic turned back to Penelope, taking the black ledger and the encrypted drive from her hands and placing them safely in his pocket.
“You have the instincts of an underworld queen, Penelope Hayes,” Dominic said softly, brushing his thumb across her cheek.
May you like
“I just know how to balance a ledger, Dominic,” she replied with a faint, tired smile.
“And in this family, the debts are always paid in full.”
