Chapter 14 - The Final Verdict in the Ashes

Lorenzo Leone choked for air, his blood soaking the white silk collar of his shirt as Dominic’s fingers tightened like steel vices around his neck.

The rain poured through the shattered bridge windows, soaking the luxury furnishings and cooling the burning barrels of the firearms.

“Please… Dominic…” Leone wheezed, his arrogant sneer entirely replaced by the raw, animalistic terror of a cornered predator.

“We can split the offshore reserves… fifty million dollars… clean bearer bonds… nobody ever has to know…”

Dominic leaned in close, his dark eyes pitch-black with ancient, unyielding family vengeance.

“My mother wore this ring for thirty years, Lorenzo,” Dominic whispered into his ear.

“She taught me that when a snake slithers into your garden, you don't negotiate with it.”

“You cut off its head and hang it on the fence as a warning to the rest of the forest.”

With a brutal, decisive twist of his hands, Dominic shattered Leone’s collarbone and threw him violently to the deck, disarming his ability to fight back forever.

He did not execute Leone on the spot.

Instead, Dominic pulled out his satellite phone, dialing the encrypted frequency of the special agent in charge of the regional organized crime task force.

“Agent Vance,” Dominic said calmly into the receiver.

“This is Dominic Russo.”

“I have Lorenzo Leone secured on board The Gorgon at the Red Hook drydock, along with twenty tons of illegal military explosives and his complete offshore financial ledgers.”

“If you want the biggest organized crime conviction in the history of the eastern seaboard, you have twelve minutes to get your tactical boats here before the tide turns.”

Penelope watched Dominic in profound astonishment as he ended the call.

“You’re turning him over to the federal authorities?” Penelope asked, stepping closer to him amidst the wreckage of the bridge.

“I thought the mafia code demanded blood for blood.”

Dominic looked at her, his expression softening into an affectionate, weary smile.

“The old mafia code belongs in the dirt with Uncle Silvio,” Dominic replied softly.

“If I execute Lorenzo Leone tonight, his syndicate splinters into twenty warring factions, and this city bleeds for the next five years.”

“By handing him and Vincent to the federal government on a silver platter, Russo Logistics becomes the clean, legitimate victim of corporate espionage.”

“We keep our legitimate shipping empire, we wipe out our greatest rivals using the law itself, and we walk into the daylight without looking over our shoulders.”

Penelope let out a breathless laugh, shaking her head in genuine admiration of his tactical brilliance.

“You’re terrifying, Dominic Russo,” she said, her eyes shining with warmth.

“I learned from the best forensic accountant in the business,” he retorted, wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling her against his side.

Within ten minutes, the harbor was illuminated by the flashing blue and red emergency lights of six Coast Guard cutters and federal patrol craft.

Heavily armed federal tactical agents boarded The Gorgon, securing Leone and boxing up the encrypted master ledgers Penelope had meticulously organized.

Agent Vance, a battle-hardened federal investigator who had spent a decade chasing organized crime, approached Dominic on the main deck.

Vance looked at the handcuffed Leone groveling on the deck, then looked at Dominic and Penelope standing side by side.

“You’re giving us Leone, Moretti, and twelve corrupt city commissioners, Russo?” Vance asked, his voice filled with professional suspicion.

“All of them, fully documented on that encrypted drive,” Penelope answered, handing over the secondary backup drive with a confident smile.

“Russo Logistics has conducted a full internal audit, purged its corrupt elements, and assisted the government in preventing a catastrophic terrorist bombing.”

Agent Vance stared at Penelope for a long moment, then slowly shook his head in disbelief.

“I don't know who you are, young lady,” Vance said, accepting the drive with a nod of profound respect.

“But you just did what three federal agencies couldn't accomplish in ten years.”

“Have a good night, Mr. Russo.”

“Keep your logistics clean, and we won’t have any reason to speak again.”

“Good luck with the prosecution, Agent Vance,” Dominic said smoothly, shaking the federal agent’s hand.

As the federal boats transported Leone away into the dark waters of the river, Dominic turned Penelope toward the aft deck.

The storm had finally passed, leaving behind a clear, star-filled night sky over the glittering skyline of Manhattan.

The blackout was over, and the lights of the city were returning one by one, illuminating the empire they had saved together.
